“In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened” (Luke 2:8-9).
No matter what you may say to yourself, you would be frightened too. Something strange happened that night and it drew attention. Ordinary people with a common event, but this was not the usual. The Lord is born, and it is anything but usual. He calls us to a journey of living in the truth of all creation, that He is the Sovereign One and will accomplish all that He has said.
Lord, I know this story, and hear it every Christmas. Help me to never put it away with the Christmas decorations, but realize that You are with us each day, and it is truly miraculous. Your message has come to me, and You ask that I look to You. You are the maker of all things, and I am surrounded by miracles. Lead me into the faith You have given me.
Lord Jesus, like us all, You were born amidst ordinary people in an ordinary time and called from amongst the most ordinary of workers, Your first witnesses. Help me to follow their suit, receive the message You give me, and learn how to rejoice in You. Let me neither be afraid, nor slumber in this world, but live boldly in the faith You have given me. You came so that I might have the opportunity to truly live. Teach me to live in Your glory. Amen.
