Devotion for Sunday, September 2, 2018

“A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not approach you. You will only look on with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.” (Psalm 91:7-8)

We all will pass through the gate of death; so this is not speaking of death. What it does speak of is the truth of those who come into the salvation of the Lord. All around are those who fall prey to the wickedness of this age and do not come into the Lord’s presence and walk in His ways. You only have to look to see what that brings. Come into the Lord’s presence and live in Him.

Lord, You created us and the world has rejected You. Help me, O Lord, in this world of wickedness to see through the temptations that lure and pull me away from You. I can see what sin brings. I know no good comes of the wickedness of this age. Help me, Savior, to look to You and see the goodness and mercy You give to those who love You. Lift me up to be with You.

Savior, You have come to do what we cannot that all who believe might be united with You now and forever. Guide my heart, Lord Jesus, to walk in Your grace and live to the glory of the Father. May I stand amidst the crumbling ways of this world and learn from You to be faithful through all that comes. Open my eyes, Lord, to see clearly the recompense of wickedness. Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, August 28, 2018

“Do return, O Lord; how long will it be? And be sorry for Your servants. O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.” (Psalm 90:13-14)

We have a tendency to drift far off from the ways of the Lord and receive what we have wrought. We blame the Lord and then lament. Do not tarry in the place of lament, but come into the presence of the Lord and know that all things have always been in His hands. Come into His will and walk according to His ways. Know that the Lord is good and it is He who made us and we are the workmanship of His hands.

Lord, I do get caught up in worldly thinking. Though we teach each other that things have changed, they have not. Guide me, O Lord, according to Your goodness to see clearly the truth of this age and to live into Your promises. Help me now and always to know that You alone are God and that all things have always been in Your hands. Lift me up in wisdom to walk in Your sight.

Holy Spirit, guide my heart this day to see Your hand everywhere. Do not let me tarry in the false idealism of this age, but see clearly that there is purpose, and that purpose is to walk where You lead. Guide me according to the grace You have given me to be humble yet bold in the faith You have put in my heart that I may live this day giving You thanks for all Your goodness, Amen.

Devotion for Monday, August 27, 2018

“Who understands the power of Your anger and Your fury, according to the fear that is due You? So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:11-12)

When things do not go the way we want them to go, we call that Your fury and anger. I suspect You call that the truth. You give a heart of wisdom to those who will come into Your presence and see things as they are. Lead me, O Lord, to see clearly the truth of the life into which You invite those who will come into Your presence. You offer to guide us through these limited days.

Lord, when I was young, I thought in terms of forever. As I get older, I see the foolishness of such thoughts. My days are numbered. Help me to live according to the days You have given me that I may abide in You as You abide in me, doing those things which will grow in me what You have always intended. Help me to be lifted up according to Your will.

Lord Jesus, You have told us that we must be united with You. Saint Paul told us that we must be united in Your death in order to be united in Your resurrection. Help me, O Lord, to overcome the obstacles of the way this age thinks that I might see things as You would have me see them, knowing that all things are in Your hands. Guide me, O Lord, to walk in Your ways now and always. Amen.

Devotion for Monday, August 13, 2018

“Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David. “His descendants shall endure forever and his throne as the sun before Me.” (Psalm 89:35-36)

The Lord swore to David. Unlike humans, the Lord keeps His promises. He will abide in the truth and delivers to us that which He has promised. Look carefully and know His word is truth. The world seeks to make the Lord a liar, but it is the world which will be found to have lied. The Lord has spoken the truth from the beginning, for He is truth. Trust in the Lord and know that His promises are sure.

Guide me O Lord through the maze of all of the things said about You that I may know the truth of Your Word. Help me to see clearly that all things have always been in Your hands. Nothing in all of creation is able to separate those who are in You from the promises You give. Lead me to live by faith all the days of my life in the hope and promises that You give.

Lord Jesus, without You it would be impossible to live in this faith You have given. By the power of Your Spirit, lead me this day to walk humbly and faithfully in the truth You have revealed. Help me now and always to hold fast to Your ways and walk before the Father as one of the godly ones. You have lifted me up and will sustain me by Your grace. Lead me to walk in thankfulness for Your goodness. Amen.

Devotion for Friday, August 03, 2018

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; lovingkindness and truth go before You.  How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!  O Lord, they walk in the light of Your countenance.”  (Psalm89:14-15)

Have you met one whom you know loves the Lord?  Their countenance shines and those around them know they are one of the faithful (not the zealots who are trying to convince everyone of their goodness, but the ones who love others and repeat the joyful sound of grace and mercy).  Walk in the light of the countenance of the Lord and reflect His grace and mercy all the days of your life.

Lord, the offer You give is right there before all.  Few are they who walk in the countenance of Your love, grace, and mercy.  Help me, O Lord, to give up the rebellion in my heart and come by Your grace through faith to walk now and always in the truth of Your presence and purpose.  Show me the difference a life in You would make and then guide me in the way You would have me go.

Lord Jesus, You have come to be the model of the godly life.  You who paid the price for salvation are also the One who has shown me the way to live.  Through the Holy Spirit, guide me to walk always in the way I should go and live according to all that You have commanded.  Lead me, O Lord, that I may walk the way of salvation and be one of those lights shining in the darkness of this world.  Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, July 8, 2018

“Truth springs from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. Indeed, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its produce. Righteousness will go before Him and will make His footsteps into a way.” (Psalm 85:11-13)

The Lord is near and His handiwork is a witness. The world clamors for evidence and wants a show, but the Lord has given His law, written in our hearts and written in creation. Yet the world goes on as it always has. You, however, have been called by the Holy Spirit to look up and then look in and see the Lord is near and present. Come to the Lord that You may abide in righteousness.

Lord, this world is so mixed up that every day I hear the calling of those who want me to go this way and that. Help me see through the noise of this world in order that I may abide in the truth. Guide my footsteps to walk the humble path of grace and repentance. Lead my mind to see through the noise of this world knowing that You are always with me. Lead me to You, O Lord.

Lord Jesus, Savior of the world. The more I look around, the more I see that this world is steeped in insanity. Your handiwork is evident, yet it is denied. You have spoken, yet it is as if few hear. Lead me through all of the nonsense by Your grace that I would simply follow You all the days of my life. Guide me, Jesus, in the way You have established for me and I will follow. Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, May 19, 2018

“They did not remember His power, the day when He redeemed them from the adversary, when He performed His signs in Egypt and His marvels in the field of Zoan, and turned their rivers to blood, and their streams, they could not drink.” (Psalm 78:42-44)

How easily we forget Who it is that has created this existence. We come up with other explanations and forget what we have seen. The Lord has done marvelous things and either we look on them and wonder, or else dismiss them and move on. Come into the presence of the One through Whom all things have their being and know what life was created to be.

Lord, the rebellion of this age runs deep and many are they who sell all kinds of things to lead me astray. I believe what I know is fake when I watch entertainment and ponder on the false narrative, yet I will not ponder on the truth You have revealed for the ages. Guide me, O Lord, in the way of truth that I may forever hold fast to the goodness You have given from the beginning.

Lead me, O Lord, that I may walk in the way of grace and truth. Lord Jesus, apart from You, there is just meandering around this creation You have brought into existence. Lead me in the deeper things that I would ponder each day upon the goodness I see all around me. Help me also ponder the rebellion that is also present that I may better understand why You have come. Amen.

Devotion for Friday, May 18, 2018

“How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert! Again and again they tempted God, and pained the Holy One of Israel.” (Psalm 78:40-41)

The battle of this age is against the One who created all things. We take for granted that what is before us is ours and do not really want to know the answer as to why it is there. We dismiss what we do not want to hear and in so doing, rebel against the Lord, for it is He who made all things. We are His whether we want to acknowledge this or not. What does He desire? Is it not love?

Lord, I too live the life I want and think things the way I want to think them. I do not want to pursue what is true and lovely, only what I want to be true and what I determine to be lovely. Guide me, O Lord, away from a rebellious heart, most especially when I do not think it rebellious, that I may see things as they are and not as I want them to be. Guide me in the way of truth.

Lord Jesus, God in the flesh, You have come for as many as would turn to You that the good life may be found. I think I have life, but it is life that has me, not the life You give. Lead me into the life which is eternal that I may walk with You wherever You lead and come into the truth,  for only in the truth can I live freely. Guide me today, O Lord, in the way You know I need to go. Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, April 8, 2018

“Arise, O God, and plead Your own cause; remember how the foolish man reproaches You all day long. Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries, the uproar of those who rise against You which ascends continually.” (Psalm 74:22-23)

The cause of the Lord is the whole of Scripture itself which speaks of His salvation in Christ. Oh how the foolish ignore what is given that they may continue in the futility of their minds to imagine a creation they cannot create. Come to the Word of the Lord and hear of the creation He has made and what shall come about for those who love Him and know His mercy and grace.

Lord, I have fallen prey to those who speak ill words of You and seek to lead people astray. Though You have presented Your case and made the necessary atonement for those who believe; yet there are many who go in their own direction and do not believe what You have said. Guide me, O Lord, in Your purpose that I would forever hold fast to the truth You have already spoken.

Lord Jesus, the final answer for this age, You have called me in the goodness of the Father to walk with You in faith. Guide me now and always to share what You have given amidst the pretenses of the foolish who reject the truth You speak. Lead me now and always to look to You, the author and finisher of my faith, that I may remain faithful and hold to the truth of all ages. Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, March 20, 2018

“They have set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue parades through the earth. Therefore his people return to this place, and waters of abundance are drunk by them.  They say, “How does God know? And is there knowledge with the Most High?”  Behold, these are the wicked; and always at ease, they have increased in wealth.”  (Psalm 73:9-12)

People of violence speak against the Lord.  Look for the inconsistencies.  They say love while speaking  Their tongues are wagging and they constantly harass others for their own benefit. Look to the Lord and do not be swayed by the wicked of this world.  God knows all things. He is not bound by time, but created it.  He knows that which He has created. Be guided by the truth that God knows all things and not by those who hate Him.

Lord, I am too often swayed by the lofty words of those who are constantly speaking and leading me away from You. You alone have the words of eternal life and there is no other place to go.  You alone know all things.  All things have their being through You.  Guide me, O Lord, to look to You alone that I would forever hold fast to the truth You have revealed once for all. Guide me in Your goodness that I might shut my ears to the cacophony of this world.

Lord Jesus, You walked humbly and boldly through this world of wickedness for our sake. You know all the things people say.  Grant Holy Spirit that I would not listen to all the noise, but learn to listen to You.  Open my ears to the sweet music of Your Word and drown out all the noise that would lead me away from You. Keep me close to You that I may abide only in You and be led only by You. Amen.
