NALC Continental Youth Gathering: Forming Young Disciples Across North America

Every two years, youth and their leaders from across the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) will  gather for four days of worship, teaching, and service at the Continental Youth Gathering (CYG). What began as a hopeful experiment in 2024 has already grown into a vital tradition where young people encounter Christ, deepen their faith, and discover what it means to live as His disciples in the world.

The first CYG – WE BELONG, was held in Boerne, Texas, in 2024 and brought together youth, adult leaders, and volunteers from across the United States and Canada. The next CYG – REJOICE, will take place July 7–10, 2026, at St. John Lutheran Church in Roanoke, Virginia, where organizers are planning for approximately 400 youth, leaders and volunteers. While the event is hosted by the NALC, its reach and impact extends well beyond. It includes partner agencies and the local community who play significant roles in making it possible.

At its heart, the CYG is not a “conference” or a “camp,” but a gathering built around Word, worship, and witness. Each day centers on Scripture, with teaching that is deeply rooted in the Gospel and the Lutheran confessional tradition, yet accessible and engaging for today’s youth. Large-group sessions combine solid biblical preaching with practical application, helping young people connect Christ’s finished work on the cross to the very real questions and pressures they face in daily life. Bible studies invite youth into smaller communities where they can dig deeper, share their own experiences, and learn to read Scripture not just as a story “back then,” but as God’s living Word for them today. And Worship is part of the daily rhythm, not a side event. Through song, prayer, and proclamation, participants are invited to bring their whole selves to the Lord—joys, doubts, anxieties, and hopes. By celebrating the Lord’s Supper with the wider church, participants are reminded that we belong to something larger than a single local congregation; we belong to the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church and that is a reason to rejoice.

A key aspect of the 2026 gathering in Roanoke will be mission projects throughout the local community. Youth will step beyond the walls of the host church to serve alongside local organizations—supporting shelters, food ministries, neighborhood projects, and other community partners.

These mission experiences are not simply “volunteer hours” to be logged. They are framed as an extension of the Chrisitan life: a lived response to the grace participants have received in Christ. Throughout the CYG youth are guided to reflect on why Christians serve, how Christ is present in the margins, and what it means to be a witness in everyday life.

For local agencies and ministries, CYG offers an influx of energetic volunteers and an opportunity to build longer-term relationships with congregations across North America. Many youth will return home eager to continue serving in their own communities, inspired by what they experienced together in Roanoke.

Events like the Continental Youth Gathering do not happen in isolation. They rely on a web of partners—congregations, local ministries, prayer supporters, and agencies that share a commitment to forming lifelong disciples of Jesus.

You can support the CYG in a variety of ways:

  • Pray and give encouragement to youth, leaders, organizers, speakers and those volunteering.
  • If you are a local mission in Roanoke reach out to the Director of Youth and Family Ministries to see how we can partner.
  • Financial support—through designated gifts, sponsorships, or grants—helps keep registration costs accessible, provides scholarships for youth from smaller congregations, and underwrites the local mission projects we are able to offer in Roanoke.
  • Help spread the word so that more congregations can send youth and leaders.

In a world where many young people feel disconnected from church, the CYG offers a hopeful counter-story: a living picture of the Gospel at work, drawing together youth, mentors, and congregations around Christ and His mission.

Devotion for Sunday, October 7, 2018

“The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad. Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” (Psalm 97:1-2)

It may seem for a time that things are not as they really are, but this creation belongs to the Lord. He is the One who reigns and in Him all hopes are made real that are in accord with His will. He is Sovereign and although this age continues in rebellion, it shall come to pass that all things have always been in the hands of the Lord. Come into His presence and know righteousness.

Lord, there are so many questions that many ask. Their questions are based upon their own understanding and not upon the truth You have revealed. Guide me, O Lord, to look to You, for You are the Creator of all things. Lead me in the goodness of Your mercy that I would humbly walk in Your presence knowing that You alone have the words of eternal life; for there is no other way.

Lord Jesus, You have come to shine light on the truth. You are the way and truth and only in You is there life. Help me now and always to seek the way You have established that I may walk humbly in the way of salvation. May I now and always be guided by the eternal principles You have given and be lifted up by Your grace. Lead me to be faithful in all that You have given me to do. Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, August 04, 2018

“In Your name they rejoice all the day, and by Your righteousness they are exalted.  For You are the glory of their strength, and by Your favor our horn is exalted.”  (Psalm 89:16-17)

Do you call upon the name of the Lord?  Do you think of all the goodness He has lavished upon you?  The Lord has created all things and yes, the wicked roam the earth, but all are blessed because the Lord provides for all.  Lift up the name of the Lord and rejoice in His goodness and mercy.  Show others your thankfulness by serving them as the Lord has served you.  In Him is all goodness.

Lord, continue to strengthen my heart to rejoice in the goodness of Your mercy and grace.  Guide me in the way I should go and let Your presence in my life be evident.  Help me in every time of need to see Your purpose for my life and to live into that purpose.  Now and always, may there be praise of You upon my lips.  May I do what is pleasing in Your sight to accomplish Your will for me.

Lord, I need the guidance of Your Spirit to lead me throughout this day.  It is a mixed up world and things happen that cause me to be distracted.  Lead me, O Lord, in the way I should live this day that I would do what is pleasing in Your sight.  Help me now and always to be guided by Your grace and mercy and to do those things which are right in Your sight now and always.  Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, June 9, 2018

“Sing aloud to God, our strength! Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob! Raise a song, and bring here the tambourine, the pleasant lyre with the harp. Blow the trumpet at the New Moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.” (Psalm 81:1-3)

God is good and provides for all the people. The harvest seasons come and those in need are satisfied. Come and see that the Lord is good; so rejoice and give thanks. Have a thankful heart and join with others to celebrate. We were created to rejoice, praise and give thanks. It comes naturally and we love being together in celebration. Come then and praise the Lord for all things.

Lord, I do love to celebrate. Teach me to rejoice each day in the goodness You provide. Help me now and always to be one who is thankful for the many gifts You provide knowing that all things are made available through Your hand of goodness. Bring me to the place where my celebrations always include You, that I may learn to be truly thankful for all things.

I am thankful, Lord Jesus, that You have led the way. You often joined with others in celebration and have taught us to delight in each other. Guide me, Lord, to walk with You in thankfulness each day knowing that You more than provide for all that is needed. Your love is showered upon us through grace upon grace. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for all the good gifts You bestow upon us. Amen.

Devotion for Thursday, January 18, 2018

“But let the righteous be glad; let them exult before God; yes, let them rejoice with gladness.  Sing to God, sing praises to His name; lift up a song for Him who rides through the deserts, whose name is the Lord, and exult before Him.”  (Psalm 68:3-4)

Live the life you have been given.  Do what the Lord gives you to do.  Enjoy the daily life as it comes.  Through it all, sing praises to the Lord who made you, knowing that it is He who created all things and shares all that He made with us.  Rejoice and be glad, for God is good and gracious and shares of His bounty.  Sing praises and live uprightly before the Maker of all things.

Lord, I become worried in the ups and downs of daily life and do not remember Your goodness.  Help me now and always to see each day the good things You have provided in my life.  Let me learn how to rejoice in all circumstances knowing that You alone are God and all goodness comes from You.  May I sing praises to You now and always, Lord, for Your goodness.

Lord Jesus, thank You for coming into this world to lead us in a new way of living.  Help me relax today.  Not be lazy, but relax and go about the business You give me to do that I may live in praise and thanksgiving for all of Your goodness.  Help me now and always to be a person of praise and to sing new songs to You for Your goodness.  Ride before me, Lord, in whatever direction You will lead me.  Amen.

Again, I Say

“Rejoice always.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16)

“Rejoice!  Rejoice!  Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel!”  We sang that hymn next to a grave yesterday, a bitterly cold wind beating on our backs.  Our sister in the faith had died suddenly, grieving us all, but still we called out the truth: Jesus is on His way, and so, even in grief, we rejoice in Him.

That’s what St. Paul intends by this command.  He’s not calling for Pollyanna thinking, a way to shield ourselves from feeling the pains of our losses.  No, but having just set forth the promise of Christ’s return, he’s telling the believers in Thessaly to confess that gospel in every situation, happy or sad.  Feel the pain, and then meet it with the promise.

So what do you face today?  What sharp winds of challenge, blessing, disappointment, or fear will pound on your heart?  Approach every situation in this conviction: you are one for whom Christ Jesus came to Bethlehem; with you He still abides; and He is on His way to give you a full share in His victory.  What happens today passes away tomorrow, but rejoice!  Emmanuel, God-with-us, God-with-you, is forever.

LET US PRAY: O Lord, as I, with Your Church, prepare to celebrate the birth of Your Son, grant me Your Holy Spirit, that I may see in His first advent the brilliance of His final appearing in glory; and by the promise of that glory, strengthen me to rest and live in hope each day; through Christ my Lord.  Amen

Tuesday, December 5, 2017 Devotion

“But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning, for You have been my stronghold and a refuge in the day of my distress.  O my strength, I will sing praises to You; for God is my stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.”  (Psalm 59:16-17)

What is the direction, the outcome of your life?  Is it to live the few years on this earth, or is there a higher calling?  Come into the Lord’s presence and sing to Him.  Let the One who created you be the center of Your being.  It was for this that you were made.  Come and rejoice, sing songs of praise and worship the Lord your God.  He is your strength and your stronghold.

Lord, I am confused by all the offerings around me, yet they really offer nothing but momentary distractions.  Guide me in the way of life as You created it to be lived that I may live according to Your purpose.  Help me see through the nonsense of this world and focus on the things that have always been true.  Lead me in the way of righteousness for Your name’s sake.

Lord Jesus, God in the flesh, You have come to lead the way.  Help me now and always to walk in the way You have established.  Guide me according to the timeless principles You have given through Your Word.  Help me take Your hand and follow You alone through all that this world will force my way.  Help me see clearly the way I should go and then by Your Spirit guide me to walk that way.  Amen.
