THE PRAYERS

Let us come before the Throne of Mercy with our prayers for the Church, the world, and one another.

A brief silence

Thank you, dear Lord, planting your Kingdom so humbly in our midst! Thank you for making it a place of welcome and shelter for all, even for nesting birds. Thank you for not overwhelming us with your glory and power. Make our faith and love grow like cedar sprigs and mustard seeds, to your glory and for the good of our neighbor.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Clothe your Church with the beauty, holiness, and righteousness of Christ. Make it a lovely dwelling-place for all people. Grant that its words and deeds may bear the fruit which you desire, and which last unto eternity.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We lift before you the plight of Christians around the world who are persecuted for your Name’s sake. Let their suffering yield a rich harvest of faith, love, and forgiveness. Shield and defend your missionaries, especially when they are met with hostility and rejection.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Plant this congregation firmly in Christ, our living water. May we abide in his love, share his forgiveness, teach his commandments, and share in his righteousness.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

In you, all good and faithful fatherhood finds its source, guide, and fulfillment. Bless all fathers, and all who act with a father’s love. Fill them with your Spirit of wisdom and understanding, counsel and might, knowledge and fear of the Lord, and joy in your presence. Grant that in their care, all children find protection, guidance, and love.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Teach our earthly rulers to walk not in the counsel of the ungodly; nor stand in the way of sinners; nor sit in the seat of scoffers. Teach them to delight on your Law; to meditate on it day and night; and to establish it as the source of justice, truth, and well-being among all people.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Keep in your care all who defend life, liberty, and justice. Teach them your commandments. Fill their minds with wisdom, their hearts with integrity, and their arms with courage and strength.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give to all who suffer the refreshing waters of your compassion and healing. Make them dwell in the safety of your care even in the midst of all that troubles them. Today we remember before you: {List}.  Help us to speak words of encouragement and offer deeds of kindness to them. Bring us, with them, into the unending joy of your Kingdom.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Thank you for gathering into your heavenly Kingdom all the redeemed who have gone before us, especially those we love and miss the most. Let us always find refreshment in your Word, blessing in your Sacraments, guidance in your Spirit, and forgiveness in your Son. Gather us, with all your people, into the welcoming shelter of your embrace. Let us abide there in joy forever.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Graciously hear, and generously answer our prayers as may be best for us and give you the greatest glory, for the sake of your dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Equip those who stand harm’s way on behalf of others with courage, wisdom, and skill. Bless all they do which is in accordance with your will. Shield them when they fall, and give patient hope to their loved ones. Bring them home swiftly and safely when their task is done.

We remember before you all who suffer, including: {List}. Refresh them with the healing power of your life-giving Spirit. Help us to minister to them with compassion and patience. Restore them to fellowship with all who love them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Thank you, dear Father, for our loved ones who have died in your embrace. Grant comfort to all whose grief runs deep. Keep us safely in your Son’s faithful care. Cheer us with your Holy Spirit. Guide our steps and shape our lives in accordance with your will. And give us a joyful reunion with all whom Christ claims as sister and brother, mother, and friend.

Amen.

Let us come before the Throne of Mercy with our prayers for the Church, the world, and one another.

A brief silence

Heavenly Father, thank you for inviting us to share your Sabbath rest. Thank you for healing, refreshment, and your own dear presence in your precious Son. By your Holy Spirit, give us grace to cherish the Sabbath and gladly draw nearer to you.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Make your Church a place of rest and gladness, forgiveness and mission, fellowship and faithfulness. Use it to teach all people words of prayer, praise, and thankfulness.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Grant refreshment and strength to persecuted Christians and Jews throughout the world. Ease their burdens and soften the hearts of their enemies, for your Name’s sake.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Adorn this congregation with the beauty of holiness and the glory of Jesus’ amazing grace. Help us invite and lead many friends, neighbors, and family members to share a closer walk with their Savior.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

We remember before you everyone whose work is difficult, dangerous, long, and undervalued in the eyes of the world. We pray especially for those who even this day experience forms of slavery and forced labor. Protect them from harm. Deliver them from evil. Free them from bondage. Grant them a just reward for their work. Help us to work for these great good things, as we are able.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Give integrity, honor, wisdom, and prudence to our elected and appointed leaders, in this country and throughout the world. Establish them – their thoughts, words, and actions – in righteousness, justice, and truth. Remind them that they shall account for their stewardship of authority and power before you, the Lord of all nations.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Grant release, refreshment, and healing to everyone held captive to suffering of body, mind, heart, or soul. This day we remember before you: {List}. Deliver them from whatever afflicts them. Let them fulfil the work you would have them do, and rejoice in the rest you bid them share.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Father, thank you for gathering our beloved dead into the eternal Sabbath of your Kingdom. Refresh and comfort all who are burdened by sorrow. Grant us strength and faith to be workers in that same Kingdom throughout our mortal days. And according to Jesus’ promise, open to us the doors of your heavenly home, where with all the faithful we will rest in your love and where knowing and worshiping you will be our joyous work forever.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Graciously hear, and generously answer our prayers as may be best for us and give you the greatest glory, for the sake of your dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. Amen.

A brief silence

Heavenly Father, “Jesus has gone up with a shout! The Lord has ascended on high!” Thank you for his triumph over sin and death. Keep us faithful unto death, until Jesus gives us his crown of life.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give your Church faith, joy, and boldness to proclaim Jesus’ Lordship to all the world until he comes again in glory.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Be with all moms, foster moms, grandmas, and everyone who acts with a mother’s love. Comfort those who are bereaved, barren, or separated physically or emotionally from their children. Bless them all with the tender love of Jesus, who himself knew a mother’s tender love and care.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Your Son has ascended on high, and is king of all nations. We pray for the earthly leaders of those nations, especially our own. Make them righteous and merciful. Conform them to your will. Teach us all to live together in peace and unity, until the day Christ comes to judge the living and the dead.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We lift before you the needs of all whose lives are shadowed by suffering or sorrow. Today we remember: {List}. Give them the abundant life promised by Jesus. Fill them with the grace and comfort of your Holy Spirit. And bless those who care for them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, we long for the day when we will live with you and your people in everlasting joy. Keep in your care all who have died awaiting your promised inheritance. Keep us in union with them, with all of your saints, and with you, in the power of your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Christ our Savior.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Hear and graciously answer our prayers in accordance with your will, dear Father, for the sake of your beloved Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Lord Jesus, you’ve chosen us to love you and one another, and to bear your love into the world. The world needs you so much! Make us faithful and fruitful, so we help nourish hearts starved for your love.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless your Church with the powerful presence of your Holy Spirit. Fill it with your love. Nourish it with Word and Sacrament. Through it, let the world see, desire, and dwell in your love forever.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Cheer the hearts and strengthen the spirits of all who are persecuted for your Name’s sake. Use their witness to cause many to repent and believe in you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless the people of this congregation with faith, hope, and charity. Fill us with wisdom and prudence. Through the gift of your Holy Spirit, make us glad to obey your commandments.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless this beautiful creation with all it needs to flourish. Make us wise stewards of it, especially the creatures entrusted to our care. May everything you have made praise and glorify you!

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Fill our elected and appointed leaders with the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, counsel and might. Teach them to love justice; to act with mercy toward the poor and hungry in their lands; and to walk humbly before your Father. Grant to all people the blessings of peace and unity on earth.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless all who protect life, health, and freedom. Grant them wisdom and integrity. Let their labors help create a safe, just world where the innocent may live in peace. Help us to honor their service.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant your life-giving Spirit to all who cry to you for help, including: {List}. Grant them wholeness of body and mind; confident hope in your goodness, and the peace which the world cannot give them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, thank you for choosing, forgiving, and saving the faithful who have gone before us. Grant that in this life, we may bear the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Gather us into your Kingdom, where those fruits will be perfected, to your glory and to the delight of all the redeemed.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant to us all that is in accordance with your will, dear Jesus, and accomplish your salvation among us; for you are risen from the dead and dwell in majesty with your Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE PRAYERS

Let us pray to our victorious Savior on behalf of the Church, the world, and all people.

A brief silence

Lord Jesus, thank you for cutting us from our tree of death and grafting us to yourself, the Living Vine. Give us courage: your Father’s pruning shears frighten us at times! Give us faith: he prunes us to bear much fruit in you! Give us love: it is the sweetest fruit of your blessed vine.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant that your holy Church may always abide in you, and you in it. May its words and deeds bear the fruits of your Holy Spirit. Through its witness, graft many souls to yourself.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give to your persecuted servants the knowledge that through their faithful endurance, they will bear rich fruit that refreshes and nourishes many hearts – perhaps even their enemies’.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You are the vine, and we are the branches. Keep this congregation united to you. Make our ministries bear fruit in the lives of those around us. Give us joy in knowing and serving you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless and direct everyone learning the way of being your disciple. May their friendship with those who do not yet know you well, bear much fruit. Use them to kindle or renew faith in many hearts.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Prune the hearts of our earthly rulers. Cut away the greed, pride, and lust for power that leads to hatred and violence. Build up all that enriches the lives of the poor and humble. Let the desire to do your Father’s will abide in all our hearts and minds.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You have overcome the world. Be the joy and strength of all those who defend us against violence, sickness, and injustice. Protect and guide them. Prosper all they do that works for peace and health. Bring them home safely and soon.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant to all who suffer a double portion of your Spirit, including: {List}. Fill them with your life. Keep them steadfast in faith. Bless and strengthen all who care for them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, death shall never have the last word over your beloved people. Thank you for speaking words of forgiveness and life to all who have died trusting in you. Abide with us. Lead us to that place where we shall dwell with you and with all the redeemed, and shall feast at you heavenly Table forever.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant to us all that is in accordance with your will, dear Jesus, and accomplish your salvation among us; for you are risen from the dead and dwell in majesty with your Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Let us pray to our victorious Savior on behalf of the Church, the world, and all people.

A brief silence

Lord Jesus, thank you for being our Good Shepherd! We see paintings of you leading spotless sheep through grassy meadows, not a speck of dirt on you. But real life is messy, dirty, and stony. Thank you for bearing us, and bearing with us, through it all. Thank you for leading us safely to your Father’s house.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Good Shepherd, defend the Church from peril. Provide for its needs. Lead it in paths of righteousness and holiness. Use it to lead many to hear your voice and follow you. Bless pastors and bishops and make them faithful sheepdogs for your flock.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Faithful Shepherd, defend and strengthen your people when they are set upon by wolves and persecutors. Make them so lovely with faith that their enemies repent of their evil ways.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Dear Shepherd of this congregation, lead us with your Word. Prepare our table with your Body and Blood. Teach us to do your will with glad and faithful hearts. Use us to lead many into your safe keeping.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Wise Shepherd, raise up under-shepherds to teach and guide your people. Call those with a zeal for truth and knowledge into the classrooms of seminaries, colleges, and church-related schools. Call those with a heart for tending your flock into parish and campus ministry. Call those who are bold to witness to the faith into evangelization and mission among those who have not yet heard or heeded your voice.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Gate of your sheep, protect us all from false shepherds, especially rulers who care nothing for our welfare. Bring your people lasting peace, rich pasture, and true righteousness.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Rod and Staff of your people, bless those who stand in harm’s way on our behalf. Guard, guide, and strengthen them. Prosper all they do that pleases you. Bring them home safely and soon.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Light and Path through death’s dark valley, be the strong guide and sure comfort of all who walk therein, including: {List}. Fill them with your abundant life. Keep them steadfast in faith. Strengthen and bless all who care for them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, thank you for bringing safely home all those who listened to your voice in this earthly life. Keep us close to your side. Lead us to that place where we shall dwell with you and with all the redeemed and shall feast at you heavenly Table forever.

Lord Jesus, we can’t imagine seeing you face to face. We can’t imagine looking at each other, and seeing you reflected in everyone’s face! Thank you for that promise. Give us grace, when it’s hard to see you in ourselves and each other, to cling to that promise. Let us catch a glimpse of your love shining through.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Make you Church in your image. In its words, let unbelievers hear your life-giving Word. In its deeds, let them see your love. In its worship, let them see your beauty. In its cross-bearing, let them see your life.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give your persecuted sisters and brothers the grace to speak St. Peter’s words to their tormentors: “You act in ignorance; repent, believe in him; and be forgiven.”

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Make this congregation bold to proclaim you as our risen Lord. Help us to speak and act in ways that reflect your holiness and love to those around us.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant to our children your dearest blessings. Teach them to trust you with all their heart, and to find happiness in sharing your love with their friends and family.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Deliver all people from the powers of sin, evil, and death. Raise up leaders who seek to do your Father’s will. Especially we pray for our elected and appointed leaders, and for the welfare of this country. Establish your people in righteousness, liberty, and peace.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Look with kindness upon all who tend the land and feed the nations with the fruits of their labor. Make them wise and faithful stewards of your bounty. Grant sun and rain in due measure, and preserve your good land from blight, drought, flood, wind, and fire.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray on behalf of all whose needs of body, soul and mind are great. Today we remember the needs of: {List}. Change their suffering into patient endurance, and their sorrow into enduring hope.  Transform shame, guilt, and despair into hope-filled repentance, and the power of death into living joy.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, thank you for fulfilling your promises to those who died trusting in you. Comfort those who mourn. Walk with us each day. Transform us into your blest likeness. On that great day when we see you face to face, let us with perfect clarity see you also in the faces of all whom you have redeemed.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant to us all that is in accordance with your will, dear Jesus, and accomplish your salvation among us; for you are risen from the dead and dwell in majesty with your Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
