Devotion for Sunday, November 12, 2023

“He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13).

The Word made flesh, our Savior, Christ Jesus: in Him is life and light.  By His blood we are healed.  His robes are scarlet with His blood, shed for us, but also, white in His purity.  The Word made flesh dwells in and amongst us.  Some await His coming, but the faithful know that He is already here.  Come into His presence and do not just wait for eternity, but live knowing that eternity has already come through Your calling to abide in Him as He abides in You.

Lord, open my eyes to see and my mind to understand that You are with me already.  Guide me in that goodness and mercy which You have already given me so that I abide in You as You abide with me in the power of the Holy Spirit.  Lead me, Lord.  You know what I need, and I thank You that You have provided all that is needed.  May I receive You into me this and every day and walk as You lead.

Word made flesh who has breathed the Holy Spirit upon me, guide me this day to do those things which are pleasing in Your sight.  Grant that I would be attentive to Your direction and live out Your commands this day.  Thank You for calling me into Your eternal presence.  May I walk the narrow way of living out the purpose for which I have been called by grace  through faith.  Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, November 11, 2023

“His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself” (Revelation 19:12).

It is interesting that many of the entertainment renditions of Jesus show a timid, weak, effeminate blond, blue-eyed, long-haired guy.  I often wonder who that is.  The Lord I have come to know is serious, eyes blazing.  He was a carpenter, so He is no weakling.  He is above all, so we dare not make Him so ordinary and simple.  Accessible, yes, but still Lord of lords, and King of kings.

Lord, let me not fall into the trap of just thinking about You as some cosmic nice guy.  You are the Lord of all creation.  In You alone is the hope of all people.  Lead me in the way of everlasting life so that I may humbly walk in the new life that You alone give.  Guide me according to Your purpose so that I may learn from You how to be faithful.  You are the all-in-all for each one of us.

Lord Jesus, You came the first time humbly.  When You come to usher in Your kingdom, it will be in the fullness of Your power and authority.  Lead me, Lord, to live toward that day.  Help me to not accept the world’s characterization of You, but instead to live knowing that all power and authority are in Your hands.  Guide me today to walk faithfully with You.  Guide me to anticipate with joy the great and terrible day when I stand before You face to face.  Amen.

Devotion for Friday, November 10, 2023

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war” (Revelation 19:11).

Can we even begin to comprehend the purity of Christ?  He who Was, Is, and Is to come is the One who saves.  He rides in and will, quite literally, sweep us up and away from this world of wickedness into the world to come.  Too often, we do not understand His call to purity.  Too often we think a little religion is all that we need.  We need Him wholly.  We need Him to save us.

Lord, I live my life day by day as it is doled out in time.  I have my moments and what I do with them is what I do with them.  Too often, they do not include You.  Help me to refocus my life so that I live knowing Your presence always.  Help me to adopt the attitude that You truly are the Author and Finisher of my faith.  Help me to give my life to You so that You can remake it as You know it needs to be remade.

Lord Jesus, I come again to You, the pure and holy One, so that I may walk in the salvation You have purchased from the cross.  Guide me this day, dear Lord, so that I may humbly walk in Your provision.  Lead me in Your goodness to do those things You give me to do so that when the day comes that You ride on Your white horse, I look to You with hope and not dread.  Teach me how to be faithful, Lord.  Amen.

Devotion for Thursday, November 9, 2023

“Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brothers and sisters who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).

There is only One who is worthy of worship and praise.  Why do we look up to fellow human beings or angels?  Respect them, but don’t revere them.  Only the Triune Lord is to be praised.  Yes, there are times when we are overwhelmed.  Yes, there are times when we are in awe of another, but the Lord alone is worthy of our praise.  You are my brother, my sister, in Christ.  Love one another as the Lord commands but worship Him alone.

Lord, I am guilty of revering others.  I see all around me a culture of people who “worship” celebrities and hang on their every word.  Guide me to look to You alone as the One who is worthy of all honor and praise.  You alone are God.  You are the One who created all things.  You alone are the One through whom all things have their being.  You alone are the One who saves. You alone are worthy of worship.

Lord Jesus, I know these things, but the corruption of my heart tugs at me and causes me to move in other directions.  I know You have come to save me, so lead me away from sinful behavior when praise due to You alone is given to another.  Forgive me and help me to repent and move in the right direction.  Guide me to love my neighbor as I learn how to also truly love You.  Lead me into faithfulness this day, O Lord.  Amen.

Devotion for Wednesday, November 8, 2023

“Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.’” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God” (Revelation 19:9).

Do you treat the invitation you have been given in your baptism as a blessing?  Do you cherish what the Lord has done for You?  Blessed are they who have been invited and come to the wedding feast of the Lamb.  The Lord died so that you could come.  Do not underestimate the gift the Lord has purchased for you.  The whole of creation hinges on the simple truth that the Lord wants you to be with Him forever.

Lord, I do not understand the times and seasons.  There are so many things that go on around me that distract me.  Guide me, Lord, so that I live the life You have given me knowing that I have been given a great privilege by Your grace.  Lead me to understand these things so that my life is truly changed.  Hold me up to have the hope of eternity in my heart.

Lord Jesus, with Your own blood, You purchased for me a new life.  You have invited me to join You in the marriage feast.  Let my garments be radiantly white.  Let my attitude be one of praise and thanksgiving.  Lead me in all my ways this day to praise You Whose work alone endures forever.  Guide me, Jesus, in the way You know I need to go.  Empower me to take those steps needed to be a child of God. Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, November 7, 2023

“It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints” (Revelation 19:8).

We are saved by grace through faith.  But that does not mean that we sit back and do nothing.  If we are on the narrow way of Christ, then we will try to do those things which are pleasing to the Father.  If we are His disciples, having been baptized, we will learn to obey all that the Lord has commanded.  We do not earn salvation by such acts, but willingly reflect by our deeds what the Lord has done, is doing, and the hope of what He will do by the lives we live.

Lord, I see so many around me who seem to do nothing.  But what do I know?  It does not matter what those around me do, it matters what I do.  I say I believe, but I often act as though I do not believe.  You have come to make me become like You, a child of God.  Lord, I know there is much work in me that must be done.  Help me, Lord, to live into the life You have given me by Your grace.

Lord Jesus, Author and Finisher of my faith.  You know all that needs to be done.  May I live my life so that I too may wear the garments of fine linen.  May what I do for the glory of God be evident to others.  May the works I do, which I know are not meritorious, be fitting with all that You desire from me.  Lead me this day as I walk with You. Guide me in the walk of faith You have placed before me.  Amen.

Devotion for Monday, November 6, 2023

“Let’s rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His bride has prepared herself” (Revelation 19:7).

What in this life do you look forward to?  Many of us look moment by moment for what will fill the void.  That void is the absence of the Lord.  The day is coming when we shall be united with the Lord forever.  He is Sovereign and He shall (as He already does) reign. Has He not told us that His people are like a bride and He is the groom?  Has He not told us to watch and be prepared for when the bridegroom comes?  He told us these things ahead of time.

Lord, these are not new ideas.  This is not some strange thing, but the truth that You have revealed over and over.  We are the bride and You are the groom.  We are Your children and You are the Father.  We are the ones who have been redeemed by You.  Guide the faithful away from the momentary life of this world to live into the new life for which You died.  Guide us by Your grace to walk always in Your ways.

Lord Jesus, my faith is not some idea by which I live occasionally with others of like mind.  You have called me into a new life which is preparing me to be united with You forever.  Guide me into this new life.  Let it be the center of who I am.  Let me not be caught off-guard but help me to watch and prepare as I make myself ready to be united with You forever.  Lead me in the way of everlasting life, now and forever.  Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, November 5, 2023

“Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters, and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns” (Revelation 19:6).

Although those who follow the Lord are a minority (many are called; few are chosen), it is still a great multitude.  From every tribe, tongue, folk, and nation, the Lord has called those who are his.  He raises up for Himself those who will choose to walk the way we were created to walk.  Come into the presence of the Lord and walk with Him all the days of Your life.  The Lord does reign; but does He reign in your heart?

Lord God, I hear these words and they fall upon my ears.  I know they are true, but my heart is quickly distracted by my worldly concerns, and I walk in the way of the world.  Guide me away from the attractions of this world and into Your arms of mercy.  You have given me a mind that can understand.  Help me to understand the right way.  It really does boil down to my looking to You and knowing that You provide for all that is needed.  You are the source and sustenance of life.

Lord Jesus, in the power of the Holy Spirit, guide me this day to humbly walk with You, my Lord and God.  Help me to know that in You alone is hope and the only future worth living.  Lead me according to Your goodness to praise and thank You, knowing that Your creation continues to unfold day by day.  You are creating in me the image of a child of the Heavenly Father.  Be the One who leads in my life, Lord.  Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, November 4, 2023

“And a voice came from the throne, saying, “Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great” (Revelation 19:5).

It all boils down to this: will you praise and thank the Lord?  There are those whose lives center upon themselves, and there are those whose lives become centered in the One who made them.  The latter seem to be the minority.  Are you a part of the minority?  Small or great does not matter.  What matters is whether true life has been revealed to you and is in you.  True life is centered upon the Lord.

The old life is still entrenched in me, Lord.  I think about myself and act according to what is right in my own mind.  Help me by directing me to the true center.  I do not have a reliable internal compass, but I need one.  I need to be pointed at You always.  You have the words of eternal life; for You are the Word made flesh.  Guide me away from myself and direct me toward love for You and others.

Lord Jesus, You have given me the word of life.  You have pointed me in the right direction.  You have put me upon the path of life.  Guide me in the way You know I need to go.  Help me to humbly walk with You, my Lord and God, and know that You alone are worthy of all praise.  It matters not what I think I am; whom You have made me and what You are making of me does.  Lead me in Your truth.  Amen.

Devotion for Friday, November 3, 2023

“And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!” (Revelation 19:4)

Keep your eyes upon the Lord.  Too often, we are distracted by circumstances and forget that the Lord has already prevailed.  Know that in the Lord is goodness and hope.  In the Lord is life and the true liberty He gives to those who walk in His ways.  Come and be led by the One who is worthy of all honor and praise.  We may be living in the pre-dawn that is this age of darkness, but dawn is coming when the light of eternity will reveal all that He has done for us.

Lord, I can become absorbed in this world’s way of living, thinking, and acting, or I can look to You with praise and thanksgiving.  It is really an easy choice in my mind, but living in the filth of this world, it is hard to do day in and day out.  Grant me the fortitude to hold fast to the truth of Your promises and live in the hope You give.

Lord Jesus, You struggled with the principalities of this age throughout Your ministry.  They were constantly confronting You.  By Your strength and in Your grace, lead me to live looking to You.  You are my help and stay.  I need You, for You alone can help me overcome the obstacles that are before me.  Teach me how to praise and worship You throughout the day.  Guide me in Your goodness now and forever.  Amen.
