Devotion for Friday, September 13, 2024

“But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons” (Matthew 12:24).

The wicked will do anything to discredit the Lord.  In what they say wrongly is faithfulness, unaware that they are serving their “father” below, they will accuse those who follow the Lord.  They accuse.  You will know them by their fruits.  The wicked are always accusing.  Do not be deceived by them but see things as they are.  No good can be done except through the Lord, He is the source of all that is good (Psalm 37:3).

Lord, I have been falsely accused when I am doing the best I can to do what is right in Your sight.  Continue to be the One who directs me, even when others are accusing me.  Where there is a legitimate accusation, help me to see, repent, and turn back to Your grace.  Where it is a false accusation, help me to see it for what it is, shake the dust off my feet and move on.

Lord Jesus, my mind can go in many different directions.  Only by Your help can I stay on the narrow path of faithfulness.  Help me to be very slow to accuse, quick to repent, and willing to obey what You are commanding.  Guide me always to see that in You alone is there hope and a future.  The wicked are all around me, but You are the One who leads the faithful.  Help me to be faithful to You, Lord, doing what You would have me do.  Amen.

Devotion for Thursday, September 12, 2024

“All the crowds were amazed and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” (Matthew 12:23)

Who can do what God does except God?  But didn’t Jesus say that we would do greater things?  The power does, and always will, belong to God, but He does mighty things through His servants.  He will do what He chooses to do.  Do you believe our Lord can do all things?  People ask, “Can this be?”  Scripture tells us plainly, that yes, this is the Messiah, Son of David, the holy One, who heals and redeems us.

In my mind, Lord, I make things so complex.  You are God, the Father of us all.  You have created me, and through Jesus, You have called me to become as He is, a child of Yours.  In the mystery of what You are doing, help me to learn more and more how to trust You in all things.  Let me not view You in amazement as if such things were not possible, but in awe that with You all things are possible.

Lord Jesus, all power and authority belong to You.  Guide me in Your goodness and mercy to humbly walk where You lead me today.  Give me eyes to see what You would have me do.  Lead me according to Your grace and mercy to reach out to my neighbor, knowing that whatever You ask me to do will accomplish what You desire.  Teach me meekness that I may have a willing heart to serve You, Son of David.  Amen.

Devotion for Wednesday, September 11, 2024

“Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak and see” (Matthew 12:22).

What is impossible for God?  He was there and healing those who were brought to Him.  Is there willingness that is a part of the equation?  It is best to ask yourself that question.  Are you willing to be healed by Jesus?  Each of us needs what we need and thinking that we have no need for God is often a difficulty for us.  If we are willing, the Lord will heal where we are blind and will give us words to speak when we are mute.

Lord, I still have so much pride in me that even with You, I pretend that I do not have need.  But I do have needs, many of them.  I need the healing that only You can give.  Begin with my pride and show me how to be humble, knowing that all things are in Your hands.  Help me to see where there is need for change, both in myself and, where it is Your command, in others.  May I be allowed to serve in Your name, bringing others to You.

Lord Jesus, I need healing.  Open my eyes to see the truth.  Open my mouth to speak Your words.  Bind the wicked one who pesters me.  Free me to be Your servant always.  In and through all things, be the One who leads me moment by moment all the days of my life.  Guard my heart, soul and mind so that I live out the life You give as You shape me to be whom You are making me to be.  Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, September 10, 2024

“He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.  He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick until he brings justice to victory. And in his name the Gentiles will hope” (Matthew 12:19-21 (quoting Isaiah42:1-4)).

Jesus has not come to sell His version of things.  He did not come to establish a religion.  Jesus is the Lord of all, and He has come offering eternal life to as many as will come and join Him.  This world is filled with suffering and sorrow.  The one thing we have is hope.  Because Jesus lives, we too shall live.  He does not argue with us but has plainly stated the fact of the matter.  Either you will or you will not come to Him on His terms.

Lord, this world is filled with arguments.  People are calling for us to go one way or another.  From the beginning, You have told us of the way things are to be.  Help me to see through the lies of this age to understand that of course it must be the way You have created things to be.  Guide me in Your goodness and mercy to understand that in You alone is there hope and a future.

Lord Jesus, You have never coerced me to do anything, but You are constantly calling me to live the life You have demonstrated by word and deed.  You have nurtured me in the faith to learn how to follow You and I have heard what You desire from me.  Help me to put into practice each day what needs to be done.  Lead me in Your goodness so that Your light shines through me this day as I seek to do what is pleasing to the Father.  Amen.

Devotion for Monday, September 9, 2024

“This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased.  I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles” (Matthew 12:17-18).

Jesus, in fulfilment of prophecy, came to make things right for all those who turn to Him.  We humans get together and the next thing you know, our group is our special group and we want people to conform to our image.  Jesus died for the whole world.  We all have our expectations but Jesus brings us reality.  Will it be your will or the Lord’s will that is done.  The Lord will accomplish salvation for all who believe and endure to the end.

Lord, You know how I have my ideas of things.  I want You to love me just as I am.  I want You to favor the people I hang out with.  I want.  This seems to be the attitude of the old Adam, but You created humanity, and You created us to be in relationship with You.  Lead me away from myself to realize that You give, and will bring, justice to all people.  Guide me into the life You created me to live.

Lord Jesus, I need not tell you anything about this world that is filled with injustice. Your justice is not to make one group superior to another.  You have come to establish Your kingdom.  You are and must be the king of my life.  Help me to get over myself, in fact, to die to myself so that You may take Your rightful place as my Lord.  Help me through my struggle to die to sin, death, and the devil today.  Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, September 8, 2024

“When Jesus became aware of this, he departed. Many crowds followed him, and he cured all of them, and he ordered them not to make him known” (Matthew 12:15-16).

Jesus never picked a fight.  Those who hated Him were constantly picking a fight.  You and I are not to pick fights, but we are to stand the ground established by Scripture when necessary.  Do not forget what Jesus said about shaking the dust off our feet if you are not received in His name.  Jesus left the scene and went on doing good and healing those whom He met.

ord, help me to follow the example You set.  If cornered, give me wisdom to stand my ground, but, if necessary, show me the way to graciously exit.  Through all things, teach me how to stand firm in my faith.  Whether I am standing still or moving, fill me with the attitude that You would have so that I may faithfully serve Your cause through all I do.  Be the One who is always leading me.

Lord Jesus, You know the difficulty of navigating daily life.  Lead me according to the Father’s will to be humble and diligent in the tasks You give me to do.  May I be guided by the Holy Spirit to do what You give me to do today.  Remind me to keep my eyes upon You with all I say and do.  Help me to be faithful to the call You give me for this day.  Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, September 7, 2024

“Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and it was restored, as sound as the other.  But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him” (Matthew 12:13-14).

Jesus healed one who was His own.  Did He break the law?  Does not God take care of us every day?  Is God breaking the law?  We care for what we care for and the purpose of the Sabbath is so that we learn how to rest.  God rested on the seventh day.  To be so inwardly focused that you are outwardly no good has been a problem all along.  We are here because the Lord placed us here.  Trust in the Lord.

Lord, You know how much I wrestle between wanting to do things the way I think they ought to be done and simply doing what You give me to do.  Help me so that I may look to You and do what You give me to do.  Take my eyes off those around me telling me what to do so that I focus upon Your guidance.  Lead me in Your goodness always to have a willing, humble, merciful, and gracious heart for all those who are around me.

Lord Jesus, You explained what You were doing.  Guide me in Your goodness to be as compassionate as You are.  Help me to learn how to be intentional in the things I do.  Let me to not waver, nor stop because those around me are cynical and unwilling to see the bigger picture.  Lead me, Lord, in the way You would have me go this day.  May I learn a little more today about what it means to be faithful.  Amen.

Devotion for Friday, September 6, 2024

“He said to them, “Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and lift it out?  How much more valuable is a human being than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:11-12).

God cares about all that He has made.  We are to care for what He has entrusted to us.  The principle here is very simple to understand.  Are you thinking of yourself and therefore unwilling to “break” the law as you suppose the law is to be upheld, or are you thinking of others?  This includes all things, creatures and creation itself.  This is a matter of adopting the character of Christ.

LORD, You get to the heart of stewardship by challenging me to care for all that You have entrusted to me.  Regardless the day, You desire that I would do what needs to be done.  Lead me  in the way of being Your steward.  Lead me through all the challenges that will come my way and guide me according to Your purpose, having the spirit of Christ live through me with all that I do.

Lord Jesus, of course I would care for a creature entrusted to me no matter the day.  Help me to never adopt an attitude that willingly breaks Your law but have a willingness to do what needs to be done no matter the situation.  Guide me by Your Spirit to humbly do what You give me to do each day.  May I learn how to be faithful in all situations.  Guide me today to be obedient to all that You command.  Amen.

Devotion for Thursday, September 5, 2024

“He left that place and entered their synagogue; a man was there with a withered hand, and they asked him, “Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath?” so that they might accuse him” (Matthew 12:9-10).

The legalists will always find a way to wrap their idea of the law around you, strangling another or freeing themselves.  It is a spiraling pit.  The law is good, but it was made for us; we were not made for the law.  The freedom of Christ is a freedom to live life as it is meant to be lived.  Obey the law of love and do not ensnare others with your idea of how things ought to be done.

Is it ever unlawful to do good?  The sinner thinks in terms of the self.  I cannot break the Sabbath, so I will not do that.  Jesus teaches us to think of the other.  Even if it somehow causes me to break the letter of a law, I will do what is needful for the other.  Ultimately, it gets back to the reality of our faith.  Either we will continue to live for ourselves, or else we will live as the Lord leads us.

Lord Jesus, the sinner in me is always thinking of myself first.  Slay the sinner that I may be resurrected to live the new life You give.  Guide me in Your goodness and mercy, and heal me.  Then send me out into to the world to bring Your healing word to others no matter the cost to myself.  Join me with You, Jesus, so that I may humbly walk wherever You lead.  Guide me in Your grace always.  Amen.

Devotion for Wednesday, September 4, 2024

“But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless.  For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:7-8).

Mercy understands what is going on.  It chooses to not punish.  In the case of those who do what is practical, why would you punish them?  Jesus is not talking about those who are always seeking a way around things, but about the faithful who often get into trouble because they do not conform rigidly.  The constant insistence that requires constant sacrifice is not the way the Lord works.

Lord, there are so many who want to run things the way they want to run them.  They think they know best.  They insist you give up any idea that is different from theirs and do not allow for any variation.  Lord, help me to be merciful with others.  Help me to no longer think in terms of what I must give, but to think in terms of what You have given that I may have the hope of everlasting life.

Lord Jesus, I am bound by sin, and I need Your help to think clearly about things.  Guide me away from a legalism that ensnares yet keep me seeking to live by Your law.  Help me to be merciful with others as You have been merciful with me.  You are the Lord of the Sabbath, for in You I find my rest.  Keep me on the narrow path of righteousness and help me to be gracious with others as You lead me.  Amen.
