Devotion for Monday, January 21, 2019

“There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in misery and chains, because they had rebelled against the words of God and spurned the counsel of the Most High. Therefore, He humbled their heart with labor; they stumbled and there was none to help.” (Psalm 107:10-12)

The high fall low and all are humbled as they work with their hands. Did not the Lord say that we would work by the sweat of our brow? Do not grumble at the Lord, nor curse the gift He gives when He gives you labor. It is the Lord alone who lifts up those who turn to Him. He is the help of every age. Look to the Lord and know that He sees and cares for His creation.

Lord, I too grumble and complain at the state of things without looking to You or inward to myself. Guide me, O Lord, to be humble and truthful, knowing that only in You is there hope. Guide me in the way of everlasting life that I may now and always abide in You and the revelation of Your truth. Help me now and always to see through what is happening in this world to know that Your hand is always present. You are there in every shadow of death.

Lord Jesus, you told Nicodemus to look to the cross as the Israelites were instructed to look at the snakes lifted on the pole. Help me to come under the shadow of the cross knowing that no matter what this world sends my way, I am always under Your guidance and grace. Lead me, O Lord, in the path of righteousness for Your name’s sake, to walk all the days of my life with You. Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, January 20, 2019

“He led them also by a straight way, to go to an inhabited city. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, and for His wonders to the sons of men! For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, and the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.” (Psalm 107:7-9)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. The Lord has given all that we need that we may be a people who are thankful. Come, you thankful people, come. The Lord beckons all those who will come to Him in His goodness and be blessed in His presence. What wondrous things the Lord has done and those who are in Him know this.

Lord, I am caught up in this selfish world which does not respect Your ways. I am tossed about on the sea of ungratefulness and complain as much as the next sinner. Lead me away from an ungrateful heart that I may give thanks in every situation knowing that You are Lord and You have given good things for all. Lead me into the place where I am thankful at all times.

Lord Jesus, You know that we need to be saved. You have come to lift us up to be with You. Lift me up this day to live into the life to which You have called me. Guide me in Your goodness to give thanks and praise for all that You have done. Let me see the good around me and not focus on this world and its constant whining. May I be found in You this day giving thanks. Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, January 19, 2019

“They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; they did not find a way to an inhabited city. They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses.” (Psalm 107:4-6)

We are all wandering and looking for the New Jerusalem. The hearts of the redeemed are not quite at home in this world. The Lord has delivered out of trouble all those whom He has called to Zion. We walk in a world of distress, but have the promise that this world is not our home. Come into the promise of the Lord and abide in His mercy and grace all the days of your life.

Lord, I am often confused by this world. Help me, I pray, to always look to You in and through all things. Guide me according to Your goodness to walk humbly in Your sight knowing that in You alone is goodness and mercy. Lead me O Lord that I may now and always abide in You and You in me. Let me see Your hand of deliverance that I may be affirmed in faith every step in this life.

Lord Jesus, You are the way through the wilderness of this life. Guide me, O Lord, that I may walk forever in Your counsel. Lift me up to walk above the wickedness of this world, yet keep me humble that I may become like You and love all whom I meet, You satisfy the hungry heart and quench the thirst of all who are thirsty with living water. Guide me this day, O Lord. Amen.

Devotion for Friday, January 18, 2019

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His lovingkindness is everlasting. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary and gathered from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.” (Psalm 107:1-3)

From every tribe, tongue and nation come those who have been called by the Holy Spirit into the counsel of the Lord, the Word of God. They come in His mercy and learn the Lord’s love. It is they who walk according to His promises and abide in His commandments, who live in the goodness of the Lord, walking in His ways and abiding in Him now and forever.

Lord, in this mixed up world, I do not see clearly through all of the obfuscation that is around me. I walk as half awake and unclear in thought, word and deed. Help me in the salvation You have provided to walk upright in Your sight and live according to all that You have commanded. I know I need Your grace and mercy, which You have provided, and thereby redeemed my life from the pit.

Lord Jesus, You alone are the Redeemer. You have paid the price I could not pay for not only my sin, but for all of those who walk in the counsel of the Holy Spirit. Lead me now and always, knowing that You are abiding in me that I may abide in You. Guide my steps by Your Word to make godly decisions and to walk humbly in the sight of the Father, singing praise and thanksgiving. Amen.

Devotion for Thursday, January 17, 2019

“Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the nations, to give thanks to Your holy name and glory in Your praise. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say,“Amen.” Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 106:47-48)

From every tribe, tongue and nation the Lord will call together those who have not bent the knee to honor the foolish things of this world. From among all nations, the Lord calls out those who bend the knee only to Him. Come then as one called into the presence of the Lord and walk humbly in His sight. Know that only the way of the Lord is the path of abundant life now and then life everlasting.

Lord, I am often fooled by the tugs of this world. Guide me, O Lord, in the way You have revealed that is for those who are called out from among the nations. Keep me from stumbling over the false idols of this age to live into the hope of eternity which You have granted by grace to all who believe. Lead me in the upward call of the salvation You give through Christ alone.

Lord Jesus, You have come that we may have an abundant life in and through You. Guide me, O Lord, in the way of obedience that I may learn from You how to obey all that You command. Thank You for the grace I need and the mercy the Father grants that I may walk with You now and forever. Keep me close to You that I may now and always abide in You to the Father’s glory. Amen.

Devotion for Wednesday, January 16, 2019

“Nevertheless He looked upon their distress when He heard their cry; and He remembered His covenant for their sake, and relented according to the greatness of His lovingkindness. He also made them objects of compassion in the presence of all their captors.” (Psalm 106:44-46)

God made a promise to Abraham and his children. It was not for our sake, but for the sake of the promise that the Lord granted grace and mercy. Lest we think there is any of our merit, know that the way of the Lord is offered, but never earned. Come then in faith alone and fall before the Lord who offers salvation through His mercy. Know that it is He who has made the promises that will be fulfilled.

Lord, I live my life thinking it is somehow meritorious. Guide me. O Lord. in the way of truth that I would fall to my knees knowing that only by Your mercy am I able to approach You at all. Lead me away from the selfish thoughts of this world to see in You the only hope of eternity. Guide me according to Your goodness to walk humbly in the salvation You have prepared in the sight of all people.

Lord Jesus, You are the Way, Truth and Life and apart from You is certain condemnation. Guide me by the grace You give that I may now and always abide in You as You abide in me, living in the faith and hope of the salvation that comes through You alone. Keep me away from the temptations of this world that I may now and always walk in Your grace and live in the hope of the promises You give. Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, January 15, 2019

“Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were subdued under their power. Many times He would deliver them; they, however, were rebellious in their counsel, and so sank down in their iniquity.” (Psalm 106:42-43)

Throughout history, there are those who will listen to the way of the world and so fall under its spell. The Lord allows us to each go the way we choose, not knowing whence we go. Do not be deceived, the way of the Lord is eternal and brings life. Every other way is the way of death and destruction. Choose by the grace He grants, not to go down to the pit, but up into the salvation of the Lord.

Lord, help me to see where the world is tugging at me and calling me down into itself. Guide me, O Lord, in the way of life which you have made sure by grace through faith. Help me to see clearly the paths that are before me that I may walk now and forever in Your way of truth. Lead me, O Lord, today and each day that I may not sink down into the pit of iniquity in which the world wallows.

Lord Jesus, You have come to save all those who believe. Guide me today, O Lord, in that way of salvation which You have prepared for all of those who believe in You. Help me by granting discernment that I may not go down into the pit, but be lifted up with You to be with You now and forever. May all that I do bring praise and glory to the Father by Your grace which sustains me in this age. Amen.

Devotion for Monday, January 14, 2019

“Thus they became unclean in their practices, and played the harlot in their deeds. Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against His people and He abhorred His inheritance. Then He gave them into the hand of the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.” (Psalm 106:39-41)

While we live in this world of sin and do not stand against what the world practices, its pollution becomes our pollution. It is not a matter of hiding, but of knowing that the way of the Lord is the way of life and that the way of the world is death. You are polluted, so do not defend yourself in terms of being good. None are good; so surrender to the One who has come to redeem you that you may have life.

Lord, I play the game of the world and think myself good when there is nothing I have to offer. Lead me, O Lord, into the true way of a life of confession and forgiveness that I may walk in the way of salvation knowing that, only by Your mercy can I not only see the state of this world, but see the grace You give. Let me not be caught up in the system of this world, but live according to Your truth which You have spoken from the beginning.

Come, Holy Spirit, convict my heart wherever I have been living a lie that I may confess to You and be absolved by the blood of the lamb. Let me not lean on my own understanding, but live wholly in the grace I need. You have come that I may have life and have it abundantly. Lead me now and always in this life to which You have called me,that I may grow in grace and wisdom. Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, January 13, 2019

“They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons, and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with the blood.” (Psalm 106:37-38)

This world has often forgotten the simple admonitions of the Lord. So deep is sin that we do not even love our families as we should. In these days, we see the same things, where parents are willing to sacrifice their children to the gods of this age. Our land too is polluted with the blood of the sacrifices. Yes, we also live in a time where this happens. Fall on your face before the Lord and pray to Him for faithfulness.

Lord God, you alone are able to rescue us from the sin of this and every age. Strip away the pretense and the false attitude that causes me to think that I do not have my part. Do not strip away my life, but bring me into Your salvation that I may discover the freedom that is found in You alone. Help me now and always to see in You the hope You have given and to walk humbly in all of Your ways.

Lord Jesus, You know our sins and the fullness of their impact in our lives. Lead me in humility that I may now and always walk according to Your Word of truth. Teach me today the way I should go that I may now and always abide in You and You in me. Lead me by the Spirit to walk through the valley of this age’s shadow of death to live into the life to which You are calling me be grace. Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, January 12, 2019

“They did not destroy the peoples, as the Lord commanded them, but they mingled with the nations and learned their practices, and served their idols, which became a snare to them.” (Psalm 106:34-35)

Why does man continue to mix and mingle with that which he knows will bring about destruction? This has been his ways from the fall. We are told not to take in that which will pollute us and then go ahead and take it in. Yes, the company you keep does matter. Yes, you will be influenced by those around you. The Lord is after making you pure even as He is pure.

Lord, teach me the boundaries I need to have around my life knowing that You have also commanded me to love my neighbor. Place in me the gifts of Your Spirit that I may walk firmly amidst this divisive world in understanding. You have told me to learn to obey all that You have commanded. Guide me to do just this now and always that I may walk humbly with my God.

Lord Jesus, You who have come to rescue those who believe, guide me this day to abide in You and avoid those places where I will be tempted to compromise Your truth in my life. Help me to walk graciously, but firmly in the truth You have revealed. Through all things and in all circumstances, help me to hold fast to Your Word of truth which You have given to those who believe. Amen.
