Devotion for Sunday, August 9, 2026

“Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.  Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses, were looking on to see where He was laid” (Mark 15:46-47).

The purpose of every funeral is to honor God, the giver of all life, and the one whom the Lord has called home.  Learning to honor in a world that does not honor can be difficult.  We are called to live the life our Lord has given us and to grant honor where honor is due.  Just like Jesus, who was raised from the dead, the Lord often has surprises for us; but we are to continue doing what is right, even if we do not see where it is in the moment.

Lord, in the example of these faithful people, help me so that if I knew tomorrow were my last day, I would still do what is right for me to do today.  Change my thinking so that I trust You above every circumstance.  Guide me in Your goodness and mercy to see that all things truly are in Your hands and that You will do all that You have promised.  Grant me the gift of living in faith.

Lord Jesus, the faithful lost hope after Your crucifixion.  Your hope was and still is present; but in this world the circumstances are often overwhelming.  Lead me in the faith You have given me so that I trust in all that You have promised.  Help me to be diligent in the faith I have and do what You give me to do.  Lead me in the way of faithfulness and grant me courage to press on when I am in doubt.  Amen.
