Devotion for Thursday, July 21, 2022

“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

Humility requires submission.  The last thing, no, the one thing the devil will not do is submit to the Lord.  There are many who will join the devil willingly.  Do not be as those whose pride is more important than truth.  You and I are whom we are and we did not make ourselves.  We are created.  Look to the Creator of all and know that He will lift you up if you bow down before Him.

Lord, pride has gotten me into nothing but trouble throughout my life.  People do not listen to me.  And they do not need to.  People do not do what is right.  Neither do I.  I am what I am and  I am not You.  Lord, teach me to humble myself that I may not walk in the anxiety of pride, but live in the peace of humility.  Guide me to live in submission to Your Goodness and mercy all the days of my life.

Lord Jesus, You have come into the world giving up status, position, and power so that all who follow you will not perish but have everlasting life.  Help me now and always to live into the new life You give me by humbly submitting to You.  Guide me forever in Your mercy in order that I would be in submission to what You have taught me.  Lead me in humility dear Savior.  Amen.

Prayers, September 4: 13th Sunday after Pentecost, C (Proper 18; Labor Day weekend)

Prayers, September 4: 13th Sunday after Pentecost, C (Proper 18; Labor Day weekend)

Deuteronomy 30:15-20 (Before you God sets life and death, blessing and curse; choose life!)

Psalm 1 (Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly; his delight is in the law of the Lord)

Philemon, whole thing (Paul’s artful persuasion on behalf of a runaway slave)

Luke 14:25-35 (Consider the cost of discipleship first!)

ELW/RCL: Luke 14:25-33 (Eliminates words about unsalty salt)

Let us pray in the name of Jesus to our heavenly Father for the Church, the world, and one another.

A brief silence

Gracious Father, teach us what true discipleship is. By your Spirit, give us the faith and steadfastness to bear its cost. Thank you for so clearly setting before us the “way of blessing and curse, of life and death.” Thank you for the grace to choose the life you offer through the death and resurrection of your Son.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for the Church around the world. Make it holy and blameless, wise and loving, fearless and compassionate in equal measure. Make it delight in your Law and proclaim your Gospel. Establish its roots in the living waters flowing from Christ its head and its life.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for the people and ministries of this congregation. Help us to meditate on your Word day and night. Give us grace to forgive, faithfulness to serve, and joyfulness to worship. Use us to lead many people to those streams of living water in which is found true life in Christ.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for persecuted Christians, for missionaries, for seminary professors and students, and for all pastors and evangelists. Give them wise and humble hearts. Use them to bring the healing and saving Gospel to those whom the world has despised and rejected.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for our nation and its leaders; and for the people and leaders of every nation on earth. Help all of us to “walk not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners; nor sit in the seat of scoffers;” but instead to delight in your Law; to meditate on your will; and to practice doing it so that we may live before you in peace and righteousness.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Your Son dignified our labor by sharing our toil. Be with your people wherever they work. Make leaders of industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will. Give us pride in what we do. Be the strong refuge of those who suffer want and anxiety from lack of employment. Help all who are able to work to find suitable and fulfilling employment, and receive just payment for their labor.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for everyone who needs your mercy and loving-kindness – especially: {List}. Refresh their hearts; heal whatever is wounded; and restore them to fellowship with all who love them. As we recall Paul’s words to Philemon, we lift before you the plight of all who, even this day, are slaves. Deliver them from bondage, and let us always claim them as kindred for whom Christ has died.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy and loving Father, with gratitude and affection we entrust into your care our beloved dead. Through your Holy Spirit, strengthen us in our vocation as disciples of the Lord Jesus, so that, not counting the cost, we always bear faithful witness to him. For his sake, bring us into your presence, to be numbered with all those who serve, worship, and adore you in glory everlasting.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

In the power of the Holy Spirit, we entrust our prayers and petitions into your hands, gracious Father, for the sake of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Transformed by his Spirit, we can live in faith toward you and in fervent love for others. Thank you! Make us more and more the living image of your Son.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We are too fascinated by power, prestige, and popularity. Give us the grace to notice, and cherish, the humble and lowly who do your will. More than that, make us like Jesus, who is gentle and lowly of heart.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Those burdened with pain, sorrow, and adversity need the strength and healing that only you can give. We pray on their behalf, especially for: {List}. Quiet their fears, heal their bodies, minds, and hearts, and renew their hope. Bless all who care for them. Give them refreshment and resources to continue their ministry of loving service.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank you for receiving all who have died trusting in you. Quiet the souls of all who mourn. Teach us to live trustfully as your dear children. Lead us into your house, where with all whom you have redeemed, we will rest in your arms, delight in your goodness, and adore you forever.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

In the power of the Holy Spirit, we entrust our prayers and petitions into your hands, gracious Father, for the sake of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

There let us know the unspeakable joy of abiding in your love forever.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

ELW/RCL: Hebrews 11:29-12:2 (Eliminates some stories of faithfulness)

Luke 12:49-56 (Jesus will cast fire on earth, completing his baptism; interpret signs of times!)

Let us pray for the Church, the world, and for one another.

A brief silence

Father, sometimes your word dismays us! We don’t like to hear about divine fire, judgment, and division. Make us brave and steadfast in faith. Give us ears to rightly hear, and hearts to rightly repent. Give us grace to show the fruits of repentant faith, to your glory and for the good of your people.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Make your Church a faithful witness to your Word. When it must speak of fire, judgment, or sin, let it do so humbly and lovingly, but also honestly and fearlessly. Help it always point to Jesus, the merciful pioneer and perfector of our faith, and the longed-for Salvation of the world.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Renew the faith, increase the zeal, and strengthen the deeds of everyone in this congregation. Cast the purifying fire of your Holy Spirit in our midst, so that all we say and do is in accordance with your Word. Use us to accomplish your will in the lives of our neighbors.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We are surrounded by a cloud of faithful witnesses, including Christians who are persecuted in this age of “tolerance and diversity.” Strengthen and encourage us by their example. Give them patient and steadfast hearts. And burn away the sin from the hearts of all who hate them, and you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Establish your peace among all people of this world. No plan or project of ours can heal the seeds of wickedness and violence in our hearts. Thus we plead: heal, purify, guide and direct the people and the leaders of every human endeavor, in accordance with your will and for our common good.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Until your peace is established, good men and women must risk their lives to protect others. We pray for all of them. Direct their decisions and deeds, so that even places of chaos and violence may begin to know your peace. Bring them safely home, and bless their hearts and lives with that same peace.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for everyone who is afflicted by the powers of sin, suffering, and sorrow. Especially we remember before you: {List}.  Be their sure hope and strong deliverer. Strengthen their faith in times of trial. Bring them safely into the fellowship of those who love them and into closer communion with you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, we commend our departed loved ones into your care. Renew to us the promise you make to all the faithful: that “when through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply.” Keep our faith steadfast and firm in your excellent Word, until that day when you bear us in your bosom into your everlasting Kingdom, and make us stand before you with all whom you have upheld by your righteous, omnipotent hand.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Hear our prayers, gracious Father, offered through the power of the Spirit; and for the sake of your dear Son, grant us all that is in accordance with your merciful will, to your glory and for the good of your people. AMEN.

Devotion for Wednesday, July 20, 2022

“But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”  (James 4:6)

Pride goes before a fall.  The devil fell because of pride.  Sins against the flesh are bad, but they are, like the flesh, temporary.  Sins against others for malicious reasons are at the heart of pride.  I will take it because I can and keep it from you.  Yes, the Lord is opposed to anyone setting themselves up in His position, as well He should be.  Humble yourself and become who you were made to be.

Lord, You know that this world is in a mess because of pride and avarice.  Lead me in the way of salvation so that my pride might be replaced with humility.  Guide me in the goodness of Your mercy to see where I act as though I were the center of things.  Lead me to know You as You know me.  Lead me by Your grace to go where You lead and do as You would have me do.  Remove presumptuous sins from my heart.

Lord Jesus, You who are Lord of lords, told me that You did only what the Father would have You do.  You spoke only the words He gave You to speak.  You are the example to follow and to You I need to be conformed.  Lead me today to hang my pride on the cross in order that the person You are making me to be may breathe new life.  Guide me in the way of salvation to live into this new life You have given me.  Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, July 19, 2022

“Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? (James 4:5)

You want your soul cleansed, yet you pour dirt into your soul.  Which is it to be.  You cannot have things both ways.  Either it is impure, or else being cleansed by the Spirit, a constant tug-of-war.  The Lord has given you His Spirit to guide you into all righteousness.  Take this seriously and walk humbly, knowing that He is always with You.  Learn to listen as He leads you.

Lord, You have given me all the grace I need, yet such grace is not for the sake of doing as I please.  Lead me Lord into the way You know I need to go.  Guide me in Your goodness to see that in You alone is there all hope and an eternal future which You have promised through the same grace.  Let me not fall back into worldliness, but move forward by Your Spirit into the goodness for which I have been redeemed.

Come, Holy Spirit, and minister to my heart.  You know where I compromise and go in wrong directions.  You know where my weaknesses are.  Guide me to strengthen what is good and to remove that which causes me to stumble.  Help me now and forever to be guided by You into the life for which I have been saved.  Conform me to the image of Christ and lead me today and always in the way of holiness.  Amen.

2022 Summer Giving Appeal Letter

June 2022

Dear Friends –

I am very grateful for the positive responses we receive to the video book reviews that are posted on our YouTube channel.  On the first day of every month a new review is available.  Thank you to the Lutheran pastors and theologians who are making these reviews of books of their choosing that they feel discuss issues of interest and importance.  The reviewers come from three Lutheran church bodies – NALC, LCMC, and ELCA.

Wanting to expand this ministry, we are now making plans to develop another series of videos in which we will be asking Lutheran pastors and theologians to answer the question, What is the core of the Christian faith that we as confessional Lutherans want to maintain, preserve, and hold onto?  These videos will be geared to Lutheran lay people who are serious about their faith.  It is anticipated that they will answer such questions as these.

What does it mean to be a confessional Lutheran?

How can I understand the Trinity?

Is it important that we call God Father?

Is it important that Jesus died for our sins?

Is it important that Jesus really did rise from the dead?

Is Jesus the only way to salvation?

Who is the person and what is the work of the Holy Spirit?

Anticipating that these videos will be concerned with the practice of the Christian life, as well as with Christian doctrine, our intention is also to address such topics as these.

How should I read and understand the Bible?

Why is worship – including corporate worship – important?

How can I confess my sins?

How can I be certain that God loves me and forgives me?

How can I give witness to my faith without being obnoxious?

What should I say when I share my faith in Jesus?

We are looking forward to letting you know when the first of these videos is available.

While I am writing this letter this year’s week of NEXUS at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, is wrapping up.  We are very grateful for the high level of interest and support from the friends of Lutheran CORE for this ministry, which provides a week of Bible study, theological reflection, fellowship, and ministry discernment for high schoolers.  It is also a great week of ministry and leadership training for the college students who serve as mentors.

I also want to thank you for your generous support of our Pastoral Formation Fund and I want to let you know about the first two recipients of financial assistance from this fund.  Your generosity supported a college student who went on a mission trip during the first part of the summer with CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) to reach out to college students in Bologna, Italy.  He will be telling about his experiences in an article in the July issue of our newsletter, CORE Voice.  He plans on attending seminary after graduating from college.  Your generosity will also be supporting another young man who graduated from college this spring and will be enrolling in the North American Lutheran Seminary in the fall.  He has already recorded two reviews for our video book review series and will be recording a third review for September.  We look forward to hearing about his experiences in seminary.  In addition, there are two more young men in our young adults group, which meets via zoom about once a month, who are planning on enrolling in seminary after they graduate from college.

I enrolled in seminary fifty-three years ago this fall.  How much I would enjoy being able to enroll all over again and learn so many things that I did not learn the first time.

The Gospel lesson for this coming Sunday (June 19) is from Luke 8, the story of Jesus’ casting out a legion of demons from a person suffering from severe spiritual oppression.  Unfortunately, I read on Facebook from many pastors who say that they will be using this text as a springboard for talking about how we need to be more sensitive to issues of mental illness or, since a legion was a large unit in the Roman army, who will be talking about our need to join with Jesus in dismantling oppressive political power structures.  How sad.  We need a faith that connects us with the power of the Name of Jesus, rather than a faith that gives us no more to rely upon than our own, limited, human resources.

Thank you for your ongoing prayers and gifts to Lutheran CORE, which enable us to continue our work of being a Voice for Biblical Truth and a Network for Confessing Lutherans.  Thank you for your prayers for us.  Please click here for a form that you can use to let us know how we can be praying for you.

Blessings in Christ,

Devotion for Monday, July 18, 2022

“You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4).

When we are done with this age, there will only be two kinds of people.  There will be those who look to the Lord and those who look away.  There will be no in-between.  There is not now, but some live as if there were.  Do not be one who compromises salvation by trying to be in the world and say you love the Lord.  Like Joshua, chose this day whom you will serve.

Lord, I am tempted by this world and the things it proclaims.  Lead me in the way of righteousness so that I would live my life following You.  Guide me, dear Lord, into all goodness and help me to see where I am choosing the way of the world over You.  Clear my mind and heart to look to You and listen as You speak.  You know what I need, guide me in accordance with Thy will.

Lord Jesus, You came into the world to not only die for our sins and free us from the recompense of death, but also as a model of the godly life.  Lead me in the way You would have me live today.  Help me to know what decisions to make and in Your goodness, keep me from choosing the way of the world.  You came in love, so lead me in love in order that I may grow to be like You.  Amen.
