Devotion for Wednesday, June 29, 2022

“For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well” (James 3:2).

The great equalizer: imperfection.  In one sense, we are not equal, for we each have our part in the body of Christ.  On the other hand, we are all absolutely equal, for all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.  Knowing that you have stumbled, why do you treat another badly when they stumble?  Should you not give them the grace you receive?  You are not perfect.  Not yet.

Lord, You told us to be perfect even as the Heavenly Father is perfect.  But I am not.  Far from it.  You are the One who must perfect me.  Guide me in the upward way and fill me with grace for others.  We all have fallen short.  Take me off every “high horse” and teach me to care about others as You care about me.  Teach me all that I need to know and then help me put these things in action.

Lord Jesus, You were intentional with every word You spoke.  Lead me, O Lord, in the way of speaking that I too would be intentional with my words.  Help me to know that You are here with us and that Your grace lifts me up.  Lead me so that the words of my mouth lift up others the way You have lifted me up.  Guide me in Your goodness and mercy all the days of my life, now and always.  Amen.
