Devotion for Monday, November 30, 2020

“So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?  They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will seek them” (Galatians 4:16-17).

The way of the world against the way of Christ remains the same.  There are those who would shut up the voice of Jesus.  But the Word of the Lord is forever.  Which voice will you listen to?  Which voice will you follow?  The sheep know the voice of Jesus.  The sheep hear and follow the Master.  Hear the truth and listen, for only the Lord has the words of eternal life.

Lord, I know these things in my mind but my heart moves to the tune the world sings.  I am often torn by the ways of the world.  Help me resist temptation and live into the life You have given me by grace.  Guide me, O Lord, in the way of truth that I may now and always follow You in all of Your ways.  Keep me from temptation and deliver me from all evil that I may forever be yours.

Lord Jesus, You know what it is to be tempted.  You know this world and the constant noise that is raised against the simple truth of the Gospel.  Help me, O Lord, to live into the life You have given me through faith.  Guide me in the abundance of grace You provide to look to You above all things and be guided by Your goodness.  You have pointed me to the Father.  Help me eyes to always remain where You direct them that I may always follow You.  Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, November 29, 2020

“Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me” (Galatians 4:15).

Some are very emotional and driven by their feelings.  In the beginning and with excitement, they go into the world happy and filled with emotion.  But then time wears the emotions down and a dullness may replace the original joy.  It really does not matter; emotions work this way with all things.  Do not be driven by your emotions, but by the One who created you and all things.

Lord, help me see how I am tossed about by my feelings.  Not that there is anything wrong with feelings, it is just that feelings are untrustworthy.  Lead me, O Lord, in the way of truth that no matter how I feel I would be guided in the truth of Your presence and purpose.  Guide me. O Lord. so that I may learn to live life as You have created it to be lived.  Teach me the way of life and how to live it according to Your will.

Lord Jesus, You have shown us the way of life.  You told us to always look to the Father and to seek to do what is pleasing to Him.  Lead me this day, O Lord, that I would learn from Your example how to live.  Let me not be overly emotional, but fervent in commitment.  Guide me to grow in wisdom and maturity.  Lead me to be one who is consistent in faith and life by always looking to You.  Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, November 28, 2020

“But you know that it was because of a bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the first time; and that which was a trial to you in my bodily condition you did not despise or loathe, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus Himself” (Galatians 4:13-14).

The Lord lines things up such that we may not be aware that what we believe to be an infirmity is actually serving His purpose.  There is no such thing as coincidence.  Everything belongs to God.  Christ created all things and they were created through Him and for Him.  Come then into the peace of knowing the futility of thinking that your will can do anything apart from the One who created you.

Lord, You do cause all things to come together.  In You is the source of life and meaning.  Guide me, O Lord, in the way of truth that I would walk humbly with You.  Let me not so much try to figure things out as much as learn what obedience means.  In the revelation You have given, guide me, Lord, ever more closely into Your purpose, power, and presence.  Teach me how to follow.

Lord Jesus, You came and did all You did for our sake.  At first, there was great excitement.  As the years have passed, it is often tempting to let the reality of time hammer away at that excitement because there are no longer those new feeling.  But that is true of everything.  Help me, Lord, to not be governed by my feelings, but to live into the truth of Your revelation that I may become more like You each day.  Amen.

Devotion for Friday, November 27, 2020

“I beg of you, brethren, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong” (Galatians 4:12)

What we are to be, we do not know.  This we do know; we are to become like Christ.  Wherever you see Christ modeled, follow that example.  Give up yourself and become one who loves your neighbor.  Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the Spirit of Christ.  All of these are the same things.  We are to be focused on becoming whom God is making us to be.

Lord, let me see through this age and everything that gets in the way of me simply becoming like Christ.  Help me to see examples that I may follow.  Help me to not be worried about what others’ think.  Throughout the day, bring me reminders that I have been called through the water and word of my baptism to become as one of the saints.  Conform me to the image of Christ and keep me close to You.

Come, Holy Spirit, and minister as I need to be ministered to.  Guide me in Your goodness to see through the nonsense of this world and live into the life for which I was created.  Help me to follow the good example of others that I may become a good example for others.  All of this is a result of Your working in me.  Lead me this day in the way You know I need to go.  Amen.

Daily Devotion for Thursday, November 26, 2020

“You observe days and months and seasons and years.  I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain” (Galatians 4:10-11).

We make laws of things and our traditions take root and rule.  We have been freed to love the Lord at all times and in all places.  Why would we want to replace that with a compulsion to behave in certain ways at certain times?  Ours is not just a religion to order life; it is a faith to live with the One who created all life.  Why do you settle for lesser things when the greatest thing has already been given to you?

Lord, help me see that I do like order such that I want to be told what to do.  Lead me, O Lord, in truth that I live in truth.  Guide me by Your principles so that I understand more fully each day what You ask of me.  Let me not be carried away by this world’s lies, but transformed by You as You renew my mind each day in the truth of grace.  Lead me, O Lord, in the way of truth.

Lord Jesus, You have come that all who believe may have life and have it more abundantly.  Guide me in the way of life and truth, Lord, that I would never settle for the lesser things.  Help me to know the boundaries of Your love and live out the faith You have given me.  Guide me, O Lord, in the way of truth that I may not replace You with days, season, events, or traditions.  Amen.

Devotion for Wednesday, November 25, 2020

“But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?” (Galatians 4:9)

Knowing all these things, why do you act as though the Lord God is an afterthought?  It is fair to ask this question, for in five minutes you will likely be on to something else.  Why indeed?  We are caught up in the foul winds of this age which seek to destroy us.  Come then and walk humbly with your Maker.  Be guided by Him and not by the insanity of this age and its self-destruction.

Lord, You know all things.  You know what kind of terror is loose in this world.  Grant that I may have discernment to see through the noise and obfuscation of this age.  Help me to see simply the truth that You are God and all that I see is Yours.  Lead me in light and life to live according to Your Word and not according to the insane principles loose in this age of rebellion against You.

Lord Jesus, You have come that we may have life and have it abundantly.  Guide me, O Lord, in the way of truth that I may walk humbly with You my Savior and be led in the way of truth.  Take my hand and lead me. Grant me a willing spirit that is humble and willing to be led by You.  Grant me a strong faith to hold fast against the foul winds of this age and the destruction they bring.  Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, November 24, 2020

“However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods” (Galatians 3:8).

We are tugged and pulled whether we like it or not.  The world around us influences us.  Will we follow what the world is saying loudly, or listen to the Holy Spirit who is speaking with a still, small voice?  Come out of the world and into the presence of the Lord and know that He who formed you will conform you to the image of His Son.  Be led by truth and not by the false winds of this age which blow where they will.

Lord, help me to see with clarity and know in truth that You have called me into Your eternal presence.  Guide me by Your goodness to live into the life for which I have been created.  Let me not fall down and worship the false gods of this age, but see Your hand in and through all that is around me.  Lord, in You alone is there hope, for this is Your creation and You know the purpose for which all things have their being.  Lead me, Lord, in truth, for Your Word is truth.

Word made flesh, my Lord and God, lead me out of the morass of this world and the waves that are battering on all sides.  Guide me according to Your will that I may walk in the newness of life that You give by grace.  Help me, O Lord, to stand firm amidst the chaos of this world and know that Your hand has me and that nothing in this world will ever be able to snatch me out of Your hand.  Amen.

Devotion for Monday, November 23, 2020

“Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”  Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God” (Galatians 4:6-7).

Think through the reality of the relationship which has been established in grace.  For a while we remain, if you will, like slaves, yet not like slaves.  We are subject to this world, yet in grace freed to become children of God through His grace.  You have become an heir with Christ through the cross in order to be lifted with Him to become like Him.  Come then into the inheritance of Christ and live.

Lord, teach me to live the life to which You have called me.  Guide me in Your goodness to see that in You alone is all hope and an eternal future.  Lead me, O Lord, in the way of life that I may grow into the inheritance You give through the cross.  Guide me along this narrow path to see into and live the hope You give which belongs to as many as believe.  May I be strengthened in You!

Lord Jesus, You have come to set us free from the death which is ours because of sin.  Freed from death’s recompense, we now, in You, have the power to become children of the Heavenly Father.  Lead me this day in the journey of sanctification that I may live into the inheritance which is promised by Your grace.  Guide me in Your goodness to become whom You are making me to be.  Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, November 22, 2020

“But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:4-5).

God knows what it is to be human.  Not only did He invent the whole thing, He experienced it first-hand.  He has set up everything to be as it needs to be.  We may not know the whole picture (and we do not), but we do know that the Lord has purpose in everything.  Come into His plan and stop trying to conform Him to your image.  Be led by the One in whom all things have their being.

Lord, help me see through those places where I think things are the way I imagine them to be.  Help me to see things as they are that I may be guided by Your goodness and mercy.  You have come, Lord, that all who receive You may have new and abundant life.  You have done what we could not do in order that we may do what You have always intended.  Lead me, Lord, to where I need to go.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for accomplishing what for us would be impossible.  Guide me in Your goodness that I would now and forever be led in the strength of Your power and might.  Guide me, O Lord, today in the way You know I need to go that I may be led by You, the hope for us all.  Help me to see clearly, love as You would have me love, and be led by You always.  Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, November 21, 2020

“So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world” (Galatians 4:3).

It is a new life that we have been given in Christ.  Living into that new life, we are to mature in faith.  Some seem to think in terms of simply living for today and not worrying about tomorrow.  We are to grow each day, more and more in the likeness of Christ.  Come then and go on the journey that grows your life in Christ and your understanding of the truth of His leading.

Lord, I do need to learn things every day.  This is true in this age as well.  Let me not be stagnant in my understanding, nor unwilling to learn and grow.  Guide me, O Lord, in the way of truth that I may now and always abide in what You have already revealed and live according to what I already know.  Lead me, O Lord, that I may be directed by You as You teach me and grow me in the way You know I need grow.

Lord Jesus, You have told us to abide in You as You abide in each one of us.  Abide with me this day that I may not remain as a child dwelling upon elemental things, but upon Your goodness and mercy knowing that only in You is there hope and a future.  Lead me into maturity that I may be guided in Your goodness to dwell upon what is right and fitting for Your redeemed child of grace.  Amen
