Devotion for Wednesday, January 24, 2018

“A mountain of God is the mountain of Bashan; a mountain of many peaks is the mountain of Bashan.  Why do you look with envy, O mountains with many peaks, at the mountain which God has desired for His abode?  Surely the Lord will dwell there forever.”  (Psalm 68:15-16)

Did you catch this?  Every mountain is the Lord’s.  Why do you worry about special places, they all belong to the Lord.  Why do you worry about special times, all time belongs to the Lord.  The Lord has come into our midst and calls us to abide with Him.  When He lifts us up to abide with Him, we are the mountain of Bashan, for the word means to be fruitful and those who are in the Lord are fruitful.

Lord, You have spoken time and again about growing in truth and about bearing fruit.  You have mentioned the goodness of Your law and having it grow in us.  Lead me to see the good things You are growing in me that I would become one of Your mountains where You dwell.  Guide me in Your ways, O Lord, and I will walk in them.  Open my heart to truth that I would hold fast to it.

Lord Jesus, You are the One who will lead me up every mountainside and along every stream.  Guide me according to Your purposes to see in You the hope of glory and the goodness You have given by Your grace.  Help me now and always to be guided by Your will and way that I may be a high dwelling place now and always.  Thank You, Jesus, for giving grace.  Amen.

Marching for Life in 2018

A funny thing happened on my way to the 2018 March for Life–I almost talked myself out of going. I was already in DC, having attended the 8:30 prayer service at DAR Hall, although technically it was the 24th National Memorial for the Preborn and their Mothers and Fathers. At any rate, my car was in two-hour parking and I had broken away from the group (of mainly pastors), in search of a parking garage to prevent my car from being ticketed. It would have been easy to just keep driving as I needed to get to Richmond that night. But then I received an email from Dennis Nelson, President of the Board and Director of Lutheran CORE, which said, “Thank you for your bold witness as you participate in the March for Life today. Your presence and involvement help communicate the fact that we as Lutheran Christians believe that life, including the life of the unborn, is a precious gift from God.” Okay then—the timing of that was incredible and I believe in God, not coincidence–better find the others.

Four minutes later, my bus arrived and within an hour, by bus and by foot, I arrived at 12th Street and Constitution Ave where I was told to look for a large Lutherans For Life banner on the sunny side of the street. For the next two hours, Lutherans of all stripes gathered there to assemble their banners, grab lunch from the food trucks, and prepare for the march. There was unity of purpose, music, and joy in the air as introductions were made and photos were taken.

For us, the March began about 2 pm and we very slowly walked 1.3 miles to the United States Supreme Court building in about an hour and a half. Along the way, we saw a multitude of Catholic priests, nuns and lay people—an amazing witness to other Christians. There were also a number of evangelicals from independent and traditional churches. We saw Lutherans holding signs and singing along to the hymns printed on the back of the signs. I will admit, I don’t trust myself to walk and read at the same time, so it was good that the hymns were familiar.

At the prayer service I noticed a lot of young people in the seats, in sharp contrast to the seniority of some of the clergy on the stage, but during the march we saw huge crowds of high school students, often dressed in brightly colored hats, scarves or shirts, as well as babies and young children. There was even an ELCA law student who attended with his NALC mother. His mom later told me, “It was great for him to see so many young adults his age marching for the cause of life.” Another young man approached us because he saw the banner we took turns carrying. He had come in from Iowa, one of only two Protestants on the bus, and he was happy to see other Protestants present. Now, 45 years after that fateful court case was decided, there seems to be hope for the future based on the youth present. This is not a battle that is going away anytime soon. I was heartened to hear that the President addressed the March for Life at the Rose Garden, but I did not witness that.

At the prayer service, I sat two seats away from an older teenager who seemed uncomfortable in her own skin and remarked that she wasn’t even religious. Near the end of the service, the Benham twins, David and Jason, spoke and much of what they had to say was directed at the youth. It turns out that their father, a pastor, used to talk to Miss Norma nearly every day because his office was located right next to the abortion clinic where she worked. Yes, the Norma McCorvey, from the Roe v. Wade court case, that led to legalized abortion in the United States. The Benhams continuously sent her cookies and invited her to dinner at their house until, over time, she became a Christian and pro-life. It is a much more complicated story than that, but I’m glad I got up early enough to hear it. If nothing else, a seed has been planted in that teenager, and I will always wonder if that day was life changing for her.

I don’t usually think of Washington, DC as a friendly place, but I met nice people at every turn all day long. Not just the marchers, but the bus drivers, the parking attendant, random people I stopped to ask for directions, and the Metro subway workers. I made it safely back to my car, parked somewhere near the intersection of Vermont and L streets, because the Metro workers knew I needed to get off the subway at McPherson Square. That was very important to know because my phone had died by that point and I didn’t have a map. Next time I will bring a bottle of water, my cell phone wall charger plus a map and SmarTrip subway card. When I finally got to my room in Richmond, VA that night, I had walked 13,725 steps and I fell asleep instantly.

To give you a feel for just how big this event was, watch this timelapse of the 2018 March for Life.

Devotion for Tuesday, January 23, 2018

“When you lie down among the sheepfolds, You are like the wings of a dove covered with silver, and its pinions with glistening gold.  When the Almighty scattered the kings there, it was snowing in Zalmon.”  (Psalm 68:13-14)

Events in history remind us of the mighty fall.  We are like sheep and lie down in a particular fold and regardless of where we are, we are under the eye of the King of all kings.  The Almighty does scatter the proud and boastful.  He humbles those who ravage His sheep.  The Lord knows the coming and going of all and it is in His hands.  Come then into the presence of the King.

Lord, I see it in history when the mighty tyrants seem to have everything under their dominion but they come to naught.  Guide me to always keep the perspective of truth where I see how these mad things spoken and done in the moment amount to nothing.  Keep me from being caught up in the ongoing insanity of this world knowing that all things are in Your hands, O Lord.

Lord Jesus, how sad it must have been for You to have looked at the proud and arrogant as they threatened You.  You through whom all things have their being looked into the eyes of those who hated You and threatened You and You met them with love.  Guide me in Your ways, O Lord, that I would walk in the love You teach me, knowing that all things always have been in Your hands.  Amen.

Devotion for Monday, January 22, 2018

“The Lord gives the command; the women who proclaim the good tidings are a great host: “Kings of armies flee, they flee, and she who remains at home will divide the spoil!”  (Psalm 68:11-12)

The Lord is in control.  The Lord will not be thwarted.  For a time, the enemies of the Lord may seem to prevail, but their days are numbered.  The Lord creates all days, they are His and He will bless whom He will bless.  The one who remains in the House of the Lord will be forever blessed.  Come then into the Lord’s protection and rest in the One who is Lord and King.

Lord, this world is in constant turmoil.  I see so many things and hear so many more about this and that.  The world tries to convince me that You have no power.  For a time they seem to prevail, but I know their day is coming with wailing and gnashing of teeth.  Help me, O Lord, to remain in Your house and hold true to what You have taught me.  Guide me, Lord, in the way I should go today and every day.

Lord Jesus, you are the King who has come and conquered death.  I am the woman who divides the spoil.  Your enemies flee before You.  In this world I do not see this as Your enemies rail all around.  Bring my eyes to see and my ears to hear the simple truth that You are King of kings and that all things are in Your hands, including me.  Lead me today, O Lord, to follow where You lead.  Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, January 21, 2018

“You shed abroad a plentiful rain, O God; You confirmed Your inheritance when it was parched.  Your creatures settled in it; You provided in Your goodness for the poor, O God.”  (Psalm 68:9-10)

Think for a moment on the reality of this world.  In spite of all that man does to man, humanity has been fed, blessed and cared for.  Throughout history all that is needed has been provided.  The widow and the orphan are provided for.  The hungry are fed.  The Lord provides, but we must work by the sweat of our brow.  He brings the rain in due season and the fields are refreshed.

I listen to those who say otherwise, and I believe their report.  Lead me back to the simple truth that You provide what is needed in due season.  I have little to complain about Lord, for You provide for all of those in need.  Guide me into a frame of mind that simply sees the goodness You have provided for all with the seasons unfolding as You have planned that we may praise You.

Lord Jesus, teach me to praise You in season and out of season.  Guide me in the way I should go and empower my feet to walk in that way.  Lead me by the example You have given to walk as You walked and to live as You would have me live.  In all things, help me to be thankful and know that in You alone is the hope of all people, for You alone modeled the way we need to go.  Amen.

Prayers of the Church, 1st Sunday in Lent, February 18, 2018

THE PRAYERS (with Lessons and Hymns following),

1st Sunday in Lent, Cycle B (February 18, 2018)

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Let us humbly beseech God for his mercy upon the Church, the world, and one another.

A brief silence

Lord God, purify your holy Church. When it is tempted by the allure of power, success, or convenience, turn its eyes to the Cross of your dear Son.  By the power of your Spirit, keep it faithful in its proclamation of repentance, forgiveness, and the close approach of your Kingdom.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Purify your persecuted people; and shield them from the temptation to forsake your Word when they are threatened by the powers arrayed against them. Keep them steadfast in their faith. We pray also on behalf of our sister congregations companion dioceses, and for your missionaries throughout the world.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Purify and guide the people of this congregation. When we are tempted to focus on peripheral matters, turn our eyes to Christ, the center of our existence. Give us grace to prefer nothing whatsoever to him.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Purify and defend our youth in middle and high school. Strengthen them to resist the allure of popularity; dangerous pleasures; and anything that would draw them away from loving and trusting you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Purify this sin-shadowed world. Grant that we may not be seduced by promises of peace and plenty that do not proceed from your holy will. Teach the leaders of the nations that, while people surely need food and justice, their lives are in your hands; and you alone are their sovereign Lord.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Purify all first responders and military personnel.  Turn their eyes to you, the King of all nations. Keep them faithful and honorable in their service; and bring them home safely when their task is done.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Purify and heal the minds, hearts and bodies of all who suffer and cry to you for help —especially: {List}. When they are tempted to despair, turn their eyes to the Cross, on which was hung the life and salvation of the whole world.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Most holy Father, we commend into your keeping the lives of all who died trusting in your mercy. When we are tempted by doubt, confusion, or the cares and pleasures of this world, turn our eyes to our Lord Jesus, our hope and heart’s desire. Fill us with your Spirit, and keep us safely on the path that leads to your eternal home and welcoming embrace.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For these things, and for whatever else is needful, dear Father, we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE PRAYERS (with Lessons and Hymns following),

Ash Wednesday, Cycle B (February 14, 2018)

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Let us humbly beseech God for his mercy upon the Church, the world, and one another.

A brief silence

Have mercy on your Church, O Lord. Cleanse it from false teaching, feigned holiness, and fake discipleship. Form it in the likeness of your dear Son, fill it with your Holy Spirit, and use it to draw all people to yourself.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Have mercy on your persecuted servants, O Lord. Cleanse them from bitterness, hatred, or thirst for revenge. Form them into the likeness of your dear Son, fill them with your Holy Spirit, and use them to lead the enemies of Christ to repentance and salvation.

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Have mercy on this congregation, O Lord. Cleanse us from apathy, inattention, and contention. Form us into the likeness of your dear Son, fill us with your Holy Spirit, and use us to draw our families, friends, and communities to the foot of Jesus’ Cross.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Have mercy on all who doubt your existence or your goodness, O Lord. Cleanse them from spiritual darkness, intellectual pride, or emotional despair. Form them into the likeness of your dear Son, fill them with your Holy Spirit, and bless them with faith and trust in you, their Savior, Lord, and Friend.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Have mercy upon all who are entrusted with power and authority in this sin-shadowed world, O Lord. Cleanse them from cruelty, lust for power, and worship of self. Form them into the likeness of your dear Son, fill them with your Holy Spirit, and use them to bring your blessings of peace, prosperity, and concord to all people.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Have mercy upon all who stand in harm’s way on behalf of others, O Lord. Cleanse them from wrong judgment or base motives in the execution of their duties. Form them into the likeness of your dear Son, fill them with your Holy Spirit, and use them to bring a measure of safety, justice, and freedom in places of chaos and danger.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Have mercy on all whose lives are shadowed by suffering, sorrow, or any kind of evil, O Lord. Cleanse them from all that troubles them and prevents them from turning to you, their Strength and their Redeemer. Form them into the likeness of your dear Son, fill them with your Holy Spirit, and restore them to wholeness and hope, in the company of all who love them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Most holy and gracious Father, we commend into your mercy all our beloved dead. We who are but ashes and dust humbly beseech you for your mercy upon us as well. Cleanse us from every sin which separates us from you and from one another. Form us into the likeness of your dear Son, fill us with your Holy Spirit, and use us to help lighten our neighbor’s burdens throughout our earthly pilgrimage. Lead us, with all whom you have redeemed by the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus, into your Kingdom, where, untroubled by sin, evil, or death, we may rejoice in your goodness and gaze upon your glory forever.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For these things, and for whatever else is needful, dear Father, we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, January 20, 2018

“O God, when You went forth before Your people, when You marched through the wilderness.  The earth quaked; the heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God; Sinai itself quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel.”  (Psalm 68:7-8)

As it was then it still is now.  The Lord goes before His people.  The Lord provides what is needed.  As it was then it is still now.  There are times of adversity and times when things are not going as we would like.  The Lord still goes before us, for all that is needed is provided.  Walk then in the way of the Lord and be content, for the Lord your God goes before you.

Lord, I have bought into the soft soap about things going well if You love me.  Lead me to the place where I know, at all times and in all places, You are there with me, in front of me and preparing the way before me.  Guide me in the way of goodness that I would now and always abide in the way You have set before me knowing that all You do ends to the good.

Lord Jesus, You had the way prepared before You prepared the way before me.  Guide me in the goodness and grace You provide that I would walk according to the way You have established.  Lead me in the righteousness You give that in You, and only in You, would I walk this day and every day.  You are the Lord of my salvation and the only One that knows what is needed.  Amen.

Devotion for Friday, January 19, 2018

“A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, is God in His holy habitation.  God makes a home for the lonely; he leads out the prisoners into prosperity, only the rebellious dwell in a parched land.”  (Psalm 68:5-6)

This world makes much ado about nothing.  Do not be politically correct, but be corrected by the One who knows all things and walk in the way of His prosperity.  Do not gain things in this world, but build up the eternal ways of the Lord in your heart that you may know the bounty of the Lord which is available to all.  Come then into His presence and do not be thirsty, but filled with His goodness.

Lord, I get caught up in wanting to be like this world.  Help me shed such desires that I may walk humbly before You,my God and Savior.  Lead me through the desert paths of this world and their false mirages to see clearly the goodness that is right before me.  Lead me in the way of eternal prosperity that I may abide in the richness of Your love.

Lord Jesus, You have come to lead us in the narrow way of true wealth, which is abiding in You now and forever.  Humble my heart that I may see the goodness that comes by Your  grace and live into the everlasting life You have made possible for all who believe.  Lead me, O Lord, and give me a heart that will follow You alone through all that will come until we meet face to face.  Amen.

Nicene Creed

Meter 10 10 10 10 10
Tune: Old 124th, “Your Kingdom Come; O Father, Hear Our Prayer”

Thrice Holy, mighty and immortal Lord,
Three-personed God, confessed, praised, and adored.
Father, you spoke: by your might and your grace,
All things, all creatures, all time, and all space,
Burst into being, and were giv’n their place.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s well-loved Son,
Only-begotten, with him you are one.
True God from God, true light from endless light,
Worlds sprang from you, O Word who spoke them right.
In you we live and move and take delight.

For us, to save and to redeem your bride,
Spirit- and Virgin-born, come to our side.
Flesh of our flesh, who under Pilate died:
Risen, ascended to your Father’s side,
Returning as Judge and King, glorified.

Life-giving Spirit, come from Fath’r through Son,
Holy and glorious, with them you are one.
Advocate, Comforter, Guide, God’s own Breath,
You spoke through prophets; you bring life from death.
You form the worldwide Church in all its breadth!

Built on the Rock, that Church confesses faith
Professed by martyr, apostle, and saint.
One in our baptism, bride of our Lord,
Heirs of his Kingdom, forgiven, restored,
By us fore’er will God’s name be adored!

Lamb of God

Meter: SM, 6 6 8 6
Tune: Southwell, “Lord Jesus, Think on Me”

Christ Jesus, God’s own Lamb,
True man, yet great I AM,
Our sins you take, slain for our sake.
Have mercy, Lord, on us.

Christ Jesus, Lamb and Lord
By heav’n and earth adored,
This sad world’s sin you bear within;
Have mercy, Christ, on us.

O Christ, thou Lamb of God,
You die beneath sin’s rod,
And rise with life to heal our strife.
To us, O Lord, grant peace.

Sanctus

Meter: 12 9 12 12 9
Tune: Wondrous Love, “What Wondrous Love is This, O My Soul”

Holy, most holy God, holy Lord God of hosts,
Your glory fills all heaven and earth.
“Hosanna!” angels cry; “hosanna!” we reply;
“Hosanna, God most high, Lord of love, high above;
Hosanna, mighty Lord, God of love.”

Blest be the One who bears God’s blest name unto us,
Blest be the holy name of our Lord.
Let Jesus’ name be blest, by all the world confessed;
Our highest and our best praises ring, anthems sing:
“Hosanna, Christ our Lord, God and King!”

This feast of gladness triumphs o’er sadness; Jesus, Lord, the victor now.
The Lamb, once slain now lives again! Every knee to him shall bow.
Joy in full flower! Blessing and power, honor and praises all heaven raises,
And earth shall echo: Alleluia!
Sing of his glory, for Christ is worthy of adoration; and our salvation
In love he wins for us. Alleluia!

Nicene Creed

Tune: American Hymn, “Blessing Honor and Glory and Power”

Thrice Holy, mighty and immortal Lord,
God in three persons, confessed and adored.
Father, you spoke: by your might and your grace,
All things, all creatures, all time, and all space,
Burst into being, and were giv’n their right place.

Lord Jesus Christ, God the Father’s dear Son,
Only-begotten, with him you are one.
True God from God, endless light from true light,
Worlds sprang from you, O Word who spoke them aright.
In you we live and move and take our delight.

For us, to save and to redeem us, your bride,
Spirit- and Virgin-born, come to our side.
Flesh of our flesh, under Pilate you died:
Risen, ascended to your Father’s right side,
You shall return as Judge and King, glorified.

Life-giving Spirit, come from Father through Son,
Holy and glorious, with them you are one.
Advocate, Comforter, Guide, God’s own Breath,
You spoke through prophets; you bring life out of death.
You form the Church throughout the world in it breadth!

Built on the Rock, that Church confesses the faith
Professed by martyr, apostle, and saint.
One in our baptism, bride of our Lord,
Heirs of his Kingdom, forgiven, restored,
By us forever will God’s name be adored!

Lamb of God

Meter: CM, 8 6 8 6
Tune: Dundee, “My God, How Wonderful Thou Art”
OR Winchester Old, “When All Your Mercies, O My God”

Lord Jesus Christ, God’s blessed Lamb,
True man, yet great I AM.
Our sins you take, slain for our sake.
Have mercy, Lord on us.

O risen Christ, our Lamb and Lord,
By heav’n and earth adored,
Victorious over sin and death,
Have mercy, Christ, on us.

O Christ, our Lamb and Priest and King,
Forgiveness to us bring.
Let hatred cease, let love increase;
Grant mercy, Lord, and peace.

Sanctus

Meter: 11 10 10 11
Tune: Noel Nouvelet, “Now the Green Blade Rises”

Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might,
Heav’n and earth are glorious with your splendid light.
“Hosanna!” angels cry; “hosanna!” we reply;
All creation sings hosanna in the heights!

Blessed is our Savior, bearing God’s own Name,
Coming to redeem us from our guilt and shame.
Glad, now we stand and see him face to face,
Shouting our hosannas, saved by his dear grace!

Tune: Old Hundredth, “Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow”
Or Mendon, “Thee We Adore, Eternal Lord!”

Lord, let your servant go in peace, your faithful Word you have fulfilled.
This Word made flesh I now embrace: the sure salvation you have willed!

With my own eyes I see the lamp of glory giv’n to Israel,
The light for nations lost; the peace that makes your wounded people well.

Glory and praise, blest Trinity, dear Father, Holy Spirit, Son,
Your light no darkness overtakes, while endless ages ever run!
